Mayor Emanuel Announces $1.25 Million Investment in Austin Manufacturing Education
|

On November 13th at Austin Polytechnical Academy, Mayor Emanuel announced that the city will invest $1.25 million in advanced manufacturing education programs led by the Chicago Manufacturing Renaissance Council (CMRC) and its managing partner, the Center for Labor & Community Research (CLCR).
"We need to invest in something other people recognize as one of a kind. We have it right here in the City of Chicago." - Mayor Emanuel
The $1.25 million in funding comes from the $5.6 million in tax increment financing (TIF) funds returned by United Airlines. Mayor Emanuel has committed to use returned TIF funds to support the city's key priorities and neighborhoods. "Austin Polytechnical Academy has always been about training students to get good jobs so they can have productive, steady careers," said APA Principal Ali Muhammad.
"This crucial funding will allow us to take a decisive step forward in establishing Chicago as a hub for advanced manufacturing and a national leader in this growing and crucial field," said Jorge Ramirez, President of the Chicago Federation of Labor and co-chair of the CMRC. "I believe that by training our young workers and helping them into these apprenticeship programs, we will establish a base of leadership that will help Chicago move forward for years to come."

National Honor Society: New Members Carry the Torch
By Desiree Wordlaw, APA Senior
|
On November 16th, the National Honor Society inducted five new members: Deon Shanklin, Dontae Thompson, Neopatra Hawkins, Reginald Jones, and Quan Trimble. These students demonstrated academic excellence and a strong will to learn. During the ceremony Mr. McIlrath gave a powerful speech to encourage us to never give up and the importance of black pride. The speech was very moving to everyone; it brought tears to parents' eyes who watched on as their children blew out their candles as the final step of induction, becoming the newest members of the National Honor Society at Austin Polytechnical Academy.

Manufacturing Entrepreneurship
at Austin Polytech
by Ms. McClendon, APA Teacher
|
As a part of an annual project with the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, APA Senior Seminar students created President Obama medallions from raw materials to a finish project. As a part of this project students are required to:
- Cost Materials
- Create Operational Plan
- Present themselves to potential customers using personal selling techniques
Regina Stanton stated that the hardest part of the project was selling them at the suggested price. She overcame the objections and successfully sold 70% of her inventory.

Alumni Update | Asia Collier
|
Dear APA Career Dept.; I've been working here at Aallied Die Casting for almost 5 months now; and everything has been going great. My co-workers treat me with respect and are very friendly. I have created some friendships. My supervisor is still awesome, and I have learned so much. This is an amazing experience. I couldn't have asked for anything better. We had a small segment about our company on the Fox Business channel network; basically explaining what we do. It was nice for my company to gain more exposure. We are having a Christmas party Friday, I can't wait! I have been saving up to get a nice car, and I have been helping out my family by doing some Christmas shopping. I really do appreciate the effort that you all did to help me get this job. I really do like it here, and don't plan on leaving anytime soon!
We are very proud of Asia as she continues to succeed at Aallied Die Casting. We wish her luck and look forward to hear more about her continued success!

Tech Trip | DMG Mori Seiki
|
Mr. McIlrath's Junior Trig class visited DMG-Mori Seiki. The topic that Mr. Mac was eager to teach was "how algorithms are involved in our daily lives." Mr. Mac said that "it is really important for students to understand how mathematical abstract concepts are playing out in different ways all around us all the time." DMG-Mori Seiki demonstrated to the students some of the most sophisticated machining equipment available anyplace in the world. They also explained how they have an algorithm "buried in the logic of each of their machines" that compensates for heat expansion of machine components taking into account dimensional changes that are "less than one tenth the size of a human hair." A great big THANKS to all the folks at DMG Mori Seiki for working with us to plan such an educational field trip!
