On The Audit Trail - Lockout/Tagout
Barbara Jo Ruble, QEP, CPEA, STC President, Baltimore, MD

Almost every compliance audit we do results in findings related to lockout/tagout (LOTO). We're not alone--in fiscal 2013, citations against the hazardous energy control standard (29 CFR 1910.147) were number 8 on OSHA's Top 10 list. >>>

A Term To Remember

Term to Remeber

Hazardous Energy - Any energy, including mechanical (e.g., power transmission apparatus, counterbalances, springs, pressure, gravity), pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, chemical, nuclear, and thermal (e.g., high or low temperature) energies, that could cause injury to employees. Danger is only present when energy may be released in quantities or at rates that could injure employees.

 HazCom - What's Next?
Carol Robinson, CIH, CSP, STC Principal & VP, Oakland, CA

HazCom 2012 is the first update to the original Hazard Communication standard (HazCom 1994) and aligns the standard to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). The parts of the HazCom 1994 that did not relate to the GHS remain largely unchanged. Read on for an overview of HazCom 2012 and its deadlines. >>>

Russ Boesch, Sr Program Director, CPEA, CHMM, Nashua, NH

The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) General Permit for Storm Water Discharges Associated with Industrial Activities (known as the Multi-Sector General Permit, or MSGP) is undergoing revision. The existing MSGP was issued by EPA in 2008 with a 5 year effective period, expiring on September 29, 2013. >>>

When Should a Generator Not Sign the Manifest?

Kathy McKinney-Tovar, STC Senior Analyst, Vallejo, CA

If you sign hazardous waste manifests for your company, have you been trained in how to properly prepare a waste for transportation in accordance with DOT regulations?  If not, do you know that you can be held personally liable for any incidents?

  Is Underwear PPE?

Curt Johnson, CPEA, STC Sr Program Director, Richmond, TX

You Must Be Joking!
It is difficult to deal with this subject seriously. But beyond your Mother's concern about always wearing clean underwear (since you could be in an accident and the doctor should only see you in fresh fruit of the looms), some cringe-worthy questions are worth asking in the workplace. >>>

Effective Control of Hazardous Energy (LOTO):  What You Need To Know To Ensure Compliance With OSHA's LOTO Standard

Date: Wednesday, Jan 29, 2014

Time: 2:00 - 3:00 PM EDT

Free! All are welcome!

Each year, STC conducts numerous health and safety compliance audits at facilities throughout the US and, with few exceptions, our auditors identify compliance deficiencies with the site's hazardous energy control program (better known as lockout/tagout or LOTO). Most of the time these nonconformities are due to a lack of understanding of OSHA's hazardous energy control standard.

Our presenter, Jerry Reid, STC Program Director, will provide a detailed look at the OSHA requirements, review the common compliance issues identified through auditing, and share insights on how to ensure that your LOTO program effectively protects your employees against the dangers of hazardous energy.

Space is limited.
