Whole Health Action Management Training Now Offered in Spanish

Jewish Family & Children's Service is pleased to announce its partnership with the National Council for Behavioral Health to offer the first in the nation Spanish WHAM (Whole Health Action Management) Training on Thursday, Jan. 23 and Friday, Jan. 24.  Be part of the first class and help move integrated care forward for Latinos.

Spanish WHAM Training is an in-person, two day group training conducted exclusively in Spanish to equip peers to help the people they serve set and achieve whole health goals to improve chronic health and behavioral health conditions.  Based on a curriculum from the SAMHSA-HRSA Center for Integrated Health Solutions, adapted for the nation's growing Latino community, the Spanish WHAM trains peers in person-centered planning and to facilitate an 8-week support group in Spanish.

WHAM was created by individuals with mental illnesses and addictions for others who live with same disorders. It teaches participates to focus on their strengths and set and achieve their own health goals.  WHAM touches on stress management, restful sleep, healthy eating, physical activity, service to others, sense of purpose and much more.  The training, facilitated by Dr. Elizabeth Ortiz de Valdez and Eunice Weeks addresses core elements of the Latino culture - Respeto (Respect), Confianza (Trust), Personalismo (Person-centered) and Familismo (Peers as Family).

After WHAM Training, peers will be able to:

  • Identify strengths and supports in 10 science-based whole health and resiliency factors
  • Write a whole health goal with weekly action plans
  • Facilitate 8-week WHAM peer support group to change health behaviors
  • Use tools for shared decision making

The program also provides a participant guide, weekly action plan pocket guide, pedometers, training posters, handouts and entry to a peer listserve for shared learning.

The course will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., each day at Jewish Family & Children's Service located at 4747 N. 7th St., Ste. 100, in Phoenix. The cost is $250.00. Please contact Gerald Peters at (602) 567-8312 or [email protected] if you are interested in this training.
