Edward Martin Burned a Shoe

Back in the 1990's, or was it the late 80's, someone from the Southern New England Farrier's Association convinced Edward Martin to stop on his way home from the American Farrier's Convention and do their spring clinic.

Edward Martin's bald pate with silver tufts of hair on the sides and wire rimmed spectacles was a familiar sight to many in those days.

While hammering away at the anvil with that rapid cadence he had, his entire body expanding and contracting with each swing, he lectured and told stories about apprenticing with his grandfather.

Mr. Martin, of course, was using a coal forge that he was unfamiliar with and was having trouble working the blower control.

In the process of building a pair of Scotch Bottom shoes, he was struggling with the blower control and pulled a sparkling shoe from the fire then stared in stunned disbelief as the shoe fell in half.

The distinguished Scotsman turned crimson with embarrassment, stating such a thing had not occurred since his apprenticeship. Then declared the need to redeem himself ,put another piece of stock in the fire and returned to work.

There is no known photo documentation of the incident, there were however, witnesses.

The offending forge appears in the photos above and below.
