Mission of the AFA
"To further the professional development of farriers, to provide leadership and resources for the benefit of the farrier industry, and to improve the welfare of the horse through continuing farrier education. |
Vern's Anvil
There's a young fella in Upstate New York by the name of Josh. He's a farrier like his daddy Vern was.
There's a little story that Josh has shared.
Near the end of his career Vern had to have back surgery. When he was ready to return to work money was a little tight so he went down to Greene County Horseshoe Supply and swapped his competition anvil for supplies.
Some years later Josh attended an AFA chapter clinic hosted by Greene County and Butch the proprietor was showing him the anvil collection. Josh recognized his father's anvil and bought it back.
If you were to check out the cover photo on Josh's facebook page Vern's anvil appears in the foreground.
Josh and Vern's last name is Hornquist.

AFA Sponsors American Association of Equine Practitioners Vet/Farrier Short Course
In an effort to strengthen relations between the two Associations, the AFA has agreed to sponsor the AAEP Vet/Farrier Short Courses this semester. "We are both thrilled and appreciative of the recent sponsorship of the AAEP Vet-Farrier Short Courses by the American Farriers Association", said AAEP Executive Director, David Foley. "These courses have given veterinary students at the various AAEP student chapters a great hands-on experience as well as an appreciation for the good working relationship between the veterinarian and farrier."
With Thanks
If you have RFD TV perhaps you know about "In the Bunkhouse with Red Steagall." The AFA was pleased to learn that our own Lee Green and his Yucaipa, California farrier supply was a sponsor of the show. As part of The Shoein' Shop's advertisement it is stated that Lee is a proud member of the American Farriers Association and the Farrier Industry Association. The AFA was very pleased to learn this and would like to thank Lee for including our Association in his Ads.
Mid Year Meeting Notes
Two days of meetings of the AFA Board of Directors have been completed in Louisville, KY. The first day was a combination of a leadership clinic led by Peter Abramo PhD. Dr. Abramo works as a marketing consultant and Director for Entrepreneurship at Wooster College in Wooster, Ohio, graciously donated his time to the association to give the leadership insight on the broad mission of the AFA and how to better implement it. The Association is very appreciative of this gift to the Association.
The following day the board heard the business at hand of the association including a dynamic new direction in marketing presented by Chair Christine Abramo. The plan included individual messages to Horse Owners, Veterinarians, and Farriers. In an effort to further these goals the Board has directed the Horse Owner Education Committee and the Education Committee to assist Marketing by developing educational materials for these projects.
