Among all of the excitement surrounding this year's AFA Convention, there was also a group of unsung heroes. Saturday afternoon, just before the annual membership meeting, several farriers were gathered inside the hotel lobby when a young woman became pinned between two vehicles near the front door. We all ran out to see what had happened when Richard Marchese, a farrier from Seminole Alabama, took charge of the situation. Marchese quickly checked to see how the lady's body was entrapped and then called out for help to move one of the vehicles off of her. A group of about seven farriers lifted the full size car and shifted it over two times, to allow it to be driven out of the way for emergency personnel. The group of farriers then retrieved pillows and cushions from the hotel lobby to support her body, being careful not to allow movement, until the first responders arrived. The group of farriers humbly dispersed too quickly to even take note of who all was present, but the hotel manager sent his deepest thanks for the heroism demonstrated by all those men that day.
