ACC Foundation Awards Grants and Honors Staff 
Funds will benefit staff projects, programs and student scholarships


Dual Credit faculty orientation, Summer Children's Theatre Festival, Peer Educators, Welding students and more received grants and scholarships from the ACC Foundation on April 30.

The Foundation also announced the Excellence Awards for staff and faculty members.

Winners of the Foundation's Innovative Initiative grants were Distance Education Director Dena Coots, who received $750 for her ongoing project Reaching Further; Dual Credit Director Akilah Martin who received $1,500 for her Dual Credit Faculty/Teacher Orientation Program; ACC Psychology instructor Dr. Jean Raniseski who was given $1,000 for her Peer Educators Program; and Upward Bound Director Regan Metoyer who received $1,500 for student development.

The grants will be used for the 2013-14 academic year.

For the first time the ACC Foundation also awarded three grants that were part of the "Adopt a Grant" program.

The Adopt a Grant funds went to Welding instructor Laura Bell, who received $1,500 for the purchase of equipment; Dwight Rhodes who was awarded $1,700 for his ongoing project Fresh Fruit for All and Drama chair Dr. Jay Burton who received $2,000 for the annual Summer Children's Theatre Festival.

 

Two additional announcements were made that will help provide scholarships for students in two different programs. The Dual Credit program received $4,000 to provide scholarships to dual credit students based on need. The Workforce Development department also received $10,000 to support students with financial need as they enter job training programs at ACC.

 

The ACC Foundation also presented faculty and staff members with the Foundation Excellence Awards which recognizes a Technical, Clerical, Support and Maintenance employee, an administrative staff employee and a faculty member. Winners this year are ACC Social Sciences Chair Nancey Lobb and Wendy Del Bello, Director of Development and Executive Assistant to the President. Each received $1,000. A third winner wished to remain anonymous and donated her award to the ACC Foundation as a scholarship.

Alvin Live Summer Concert Series Lineup Announced
Concerts include Roger Creager, Amber and the Old Rascals and Mary Smith with Mystique
Texas Country singer Roger Creager
The Alvin Live Summer Concert Series will host a mix of country, rock and oldies musicians during its annual concerts in the K-219 studio.

Headlining the series this summer is Texas Country legend Roger Creager, who will have an acoustic performance on July 18.

The 2013 Summer Series will kick off June 13 with Alvin's own Amber and the Old Rascals.The group plays anything from Merle Haggard to George Jones for their country performances. Their rock side includes everything between the Beatles and Eagles. They also perform Motown hits and modern country.

Closing out the concert series will be Mary Smith and Mystique on August 8. The group's repertoire is a mix of old school and new school tunes that include Motown and R&B hits.

The concerts are sponsored by the ACC Foundation and performed at the K-219 studio. Refreshments will be provided. 

 

Seats for the Roger Creager concert are $125. Fans can also reserve a table of four for $1,000. Tickets are $40 for the Old Rascals and Mary Smith and the Mystique. Seating for all concerts is limited.

ACC Honors Students Present Research at Regional Conference

ACC Honors students had a chance to present research projects during the Great Plains Honors Council annual conference on April 5-7.

"The students did an excellent job of representing ACC and received positive comments on their presentations from students and honors faculty advisors who attended," said ACC Honors Committee Chair Ann Guess.

 

Two of the students, Karen Bonggot and Lisa Hall, both of Pearland, were nominated for the Dennis Boe award for best research papers.

 

Other students participating at the conference included John Brundrett, of Manvel, Tonya Lloyd, of Alvin, Tomas Valle, of Alvin, Misty Jackson, of Alvin, Seth Elder, of Alvin, Sarah Coe, of Friendswood and Deanna Gardner, of Liverpool.

 

The Great Plains Honors Council is a six-state regional honors organization of two-year and four-year colleges and universities and it is affiliated with the National Collegiate Honors Council.

 

The conference was hosted at West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas.

Students Receive Scholarships During Annual Awards Day

Many ACC programs and civic organizations awarded students with scholarships during Awards Day on April 29.

DCVS student Zach Gruetzner also was given the President's Award for his academic achievement, community volunteer work and his immense involvement on campus.

Nursing and Health Science student Jennifer Kleinhenz, of Manvel, was awarded the Dean F.J. Phillips Memorial Scholarship for $900.

Ellida Ortega, of Alvin, received the Dean's Scholarship for $350. She is seeking a certification in counseling.

The civic organizations who participated in Awards Day include: Alvin Noon Lions Club, Alvin Kiwanis Club, American Association of University Women and Soroptimist International.

High School Instructors, ACC Faculty Discuss Curriculum Standards
Annual meeting helps area schools ensure college readiness

Teachers from 10 school districts met with Alvin Community College instructors during the annual Articulation Seminar on April 12.
 
The seminars give the teachers and college instructors a chance to make sure students are properly prepared to enter
Associate of Applied Science programs once they graduate from high school. Students need appropriate skills at the high school level so they can be successful in pursuing a  degree and becoming employable.

 

There were 135 teachers and instructors who participated in the meetings.

which are conducted by the Educators Alliance for Articulation Credit.

 

Some of the topics discussed in the meetings included program requirements, application processes, college entrance exam requirements, job outlooks and potential earnings. 

 

Several ACC programs presented information about their standards at the seminar including Culinary Arts, Allied Health, Communications, Office Management and more.

Runners Lace Up for Innaugural ACC Dolphin Dash
Event benefited ACC Student Government Association
 

More than 70 runners raced around the ACC campus during the first Dolphin Dash 5k Fun Run on April 20.

The event raised $950 that will go to the ACC Student Government Association.

The winners were:

Women 35 and older: first place - Teresa Craft, second place - Betty Cole.

 

Men 35 and older: first place - Eddie Ramos, Jr. second place - Joe Melenric.

 

Women 35 and younger: first place - Rebecca Taylor, second place - Ana Martinez.

 

Male 35 and younger: first place - Adam Infante, second place - Zach Del Bello.

 

In addition to the 5K, the ACC Student Veterans Association and the Church of Christ Student Fellowship offered kid-friendly activities to participants. 

President Recognizes Students for Academic Excellence
Presidential Scholars honored at annual President's Tea  
Twenty students were given the distinction of Presidential Scholar during the President's Tea on April 30.

Students must meet strict academic standards in order to be named a Presidential Scholar. In addition to other curriculum requirements, they must have
completed a minimum of 45 semester hours and maintained at least a 3.9 GPA.

Education Students Get a Lesson in First Generation College
Six students and Child Development/Education Chair Jeanine Wilburn attended the Houston A+ Challenge documentary screening and discussion of first generation college students.
Six ACC Education students recently attended a conference in Houston which screened a documentary about first generation college students.

The event also had a panel of speakers that discussed the issues faced by first generation students.

The students who attended are Jerome Davis, Devonda Davis, Tina Anderson, Heather Sutton, Alex Tews, Adam Glasgow

The documentary follows four high school students who hope to be the first in their family to attend college. Shot over the course of three years and featuring education experts, the documentary addresses the problems of access to a college education faced by first generation and low-income students.

The discussion panel included Mark Cueva with the City of Houston, Michele Bobadilla with University Crossroads, Maria Fernandez with the San Antonio Education Partnership and Bob Wimpleberg with the All Kids Alliance. 

The ACC students had an opportunity to ask the panel questions about the efforts made in Texas high schools to provide information about financial aid and colleges to the local first generation students.

The opportunity for the ACC students to see over 500 educators and professionals will be a valuable experience as they pursue their education, said Jeanine Wilburn, Child Development and Education Chair.

ACC Softball team ousted from tournament
Baseball team enters Region XIV tournament on May 11

The ACC Softball team was eliminated from NJCAA Region XIV tournament with a 6-0 loss against San Jacinto College on May 3. They closed their season with a 16-32 record.

The ACC Baseball team will begin play in the NJCAA Region XIV tournament on May 11 at Angelina College in Lufkin. The winner of the tournament advances to the NJCAA Division I World Series.

The baseball team won its last home game on May 3 with a 13-6 trouncing of San Jacingo College. Their season closed on May 4 with a 5-4 loss against San Jacinto. The Dolphins ended their regular season with a 34-20 record.

The Dolphins will be the #2 seed in the Region XIV tournament.

ACC Allied Health Programs Stage Drill

Several of the Alvin Community College allied health programs came together for the spring Interprofessional Drill on April 26 in the college's simulation emergency room facility.

The drill gives students a chance to deal with emergency scenarios including a gun shot victim, a patient injured in a car wreck and a patient with difficulty breathing among others.

Students will likely face the same type of scenarios once they graduate and begin working in the medical field.

 

Students from the Emergency Medical Technology, Associate Degree Nursing and Respiratory Care programs participated in the drill.

 

The health care departments have the interprofessional drill twice a year.

Student Government Association Elects Officers

The ACC Student Government Association recently elected officers for the 2013-2014 school year. The new officers are Kayla Soliz, president, Evelyn Nichole Rogers, vice president, Wanji Banda, parliamentarian, John Joe Camacho, historian, Jayden Faust, secretary and Samuel Clark, treasurer.

 

The Student Government Association one of the largest and most active organizations on campus. With members representing a diverse number of majors and other student clubs, SGA serves as the voice of the ACC student.

 

In addition to its annual events including the Fall Festival Haunted House, Dolphin Dash 5K Fun Run, Constitution Day Celebration and President's Forum, the ACC SGA is also active with the Texas Junior College Student Government Association. Recently, the ACC SGA was elected at the vice president school of Region V of TJCSGA.
