ACC Instructors, Local Teachers Discuss Curriculum
Teachers from 10 area school districts sat down with Alvin Community College instructors on April 12 during ACC's annual Articulation Day seminar to ensure that high school course curriculums are coinciding with college standards.
Articulation helps ensure that high school students are prepared to enter college Associate of Applied Science programs with the proper skills needed to pursue their degree and become employable.
"Each meeting between college faculty and district teachers provides an exchange of up-to-date course curriculum in addition to job potential and wage information," said Pamela Bethscheider, director of the Educators Alliance for Articulated Credit.
Instructors from ACC Associate of Applied Science programs like Communications, Culinary Arts, Management Development, Polysomnography, Licensed Vocational Nursing and other departments spoke with high school instructors at the Nolan Ryan Center. There were 135 teachers and instructors who participated in the meetings.
The articulation meetings are conducted by the Educators Alliance for Articulation Credit.
"Career and Technical Education directors and teachers told me these meetings were well-organized and provided valuable curriculum information," Bethscheider said. "Teachers always remark about how beneficial it is to come together with their colleagues from other districts and discuss their teaching methodologies and how they encourage the articulation process from high school to college. "
Some of the topics discussed in the meetings included program requirements, application processes, college entrance exam requirements, job outlooks and potential earnings.
Many of the instructors focused on the basic skills that each student needs before they apply for a particular program.
"As much as they can get done before they begin the program is always helpful," said Stacy Pedigo, Electroneurodiagnostics program director.
The Alliance includes ACC and College of the Mainland along with 13 area school districts.
Attending the articulation day were school districts from Alvin, Angleton, Clear Creek, Danbury, Friendswood, Hitchcock, Lamar, Pearland, Santa Fe and Texas City.
