There's all types of patients and situations that health care professionals will experience in an emergency room. Many of those situations can also occur at the exact same time.
Alvin Community College health care students got a glimpse of those situations during an interprofessional drill on April 26 at the college's simulation emergency room facility.
The students were forced to deal with several patients including a gunshot victim, a wreck victim, an injured woman in police custody among others. Students will likely face the same type of scenarios once they graduate and begin working in the medical field.
"I believe that the interprofessional drill was a 'wake-up' experience for the students," said Diane Flatland, ACC Allied Health division chair.
"The drill focused on building communication and teamwork among the various professions. This is always very stressful for the students, because they do not know what is going to happen next and I believe a certain amount of stress is beneficial to the student. It helps them perform better and able to handle emergencies in the future."
Students from the Emergency Medical Technology, Associate Degree Nursing and Respiratory Care programs participated in the drill.
The health care departments have the interprofessional drill twice a year.
