SELECTION-THE 1ST STEP TO PEAK PERFORMANCE

The 3 criteria for selecting a career or task for you or someone you manage are:

  1. Good.  Are you/they good at it?
  2. Enjoy.  Do you/they enjoy it?
  3. Value.  Does it add value to you/them, or the customer, or the project, or the company?

People who enjoy their career are usually in a state of well-being.  This can be a stepping stone to reach peak performance.  Researchers now show that a happy person is far more likely to achieve peak performance.

DID DR. SHINE SELECT A GREAT CAREER?

Oh yes, he did! Let's look:

  1. People. He loves people, so he set up his shoe shine shop at Boston's Logan airport where thousands of people pass daily.
  2. Passion. He chose a career that fuels his passion-he loves talking to people one on one.
  3. Endurance & Comfort. His MS causes limitations so he chose a career that allows him to sit.
  4. Adding Value. He certainly adds value to his own life and to others by bringing out the best in each person and helping them find the spark that puts a shine on their face.

EXERCISE

I invite you this week to look at your career, a task, or to one person you manage. Then reflect on these questions:

  1. Am I/they good at it?
  2. Do I/they like it?
  3. Am I adding value to the project, to others, or to the organization?

I am trained to assist people in finding their own spark and shine in themselves and the spark and shine in those they manage. I coach leaders and individuals to wisely select their career choices and tasks. Just pick up the phone and call me. Invest in yourself. You're worth it!

"Pick the right dream, examine it, and make sure it is a dream that suits you well enough that you will want to work hard, very hard, to make it come true and also make sure that even if it doesn't come true, you will feel glad and proud that you pursued anyway. You will feel satisfied to have done what you have done, even if you didn't achieve the dream. If you select wisely, the pursuit of the dream becomes the great reward, the love of your working life. The final outcome matters far less than spending a life doing what you love."
