A New Peak

This is a second in a series on achieving peak performance for yourself and others you may manage. I acknowledge as a resource Edward Hallowell, psychologist, neuroscience expert and best-selling author.

BACKGROUND

Before discussing Dr. Hallowell's 5 steps for achieving peak performance, we need to examine his definition of peak performance.

TRADITIONAL DEFINITION OF PEAK PERFORMANCE

Peak performance is sometimes thought of as a single event for achieving a person's highest feats or goals, such as climbing a mountain, getting a perfect score on a test, shooting your best golf game, or being the top salesperson. This definition of peak performance requires meeting a standard that few can ever reach and even fewer can maintain. In fact, this type of standard often leads to frustration, discouragement, or even surrender.

A NEW DEFINITION OF PEAK PERFORMANCE

Dr. Hallowell defines peak performance as consistent excellence with improvement over time at a specific task or set of tasks. Using this definition do you agree that each of us has it within ourselves to achieve peak performance?

EXERCISE

I invite you to look at one task or project this week. Now, using the new definition of peak performance, please reflect on these questions:

1.         Excellence-can I let go of any need for perfectionism and replace it with the word

            excellence?

2.         Consistency-am I consistent? If not, what's stopping me? Am I just making excuses?

3.         Improvement-how am I improving each day?

I coach people to achieve excellence.  Pick up the phone and invest in yourself.  You're worth it!

"Excellence is never an accident.  It is always the result of high intentions, sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives-choice, not chance, determines your destiny."
