The scene is Boston's Logan airport. Edward Hallowell, M.D., psychiatrist, neuroscience expert, and bestselling author is waiting for his next flight. He is on a journey to interview people for his new book on achieving peak performance. Among his interviewees will be a winner of the Purple Heart, billionaires, CEOs of fortune 100 companies, famous professors, and psychiatrists.

A MAGICAL SHOE SHINE |
Dr. Halloweel decides to get his Weejuns polished and spots an empty shoe stand with a man sitting next to it with his arms folded over a walker.
"I'm the shoe-shine guy...name's Dr. Shine. Step right on up into my office!" Dr. Shine asked what kind of work Dr. Hallowell did. "I'm a psychiatrist and writer in the business of trying to bring out the best in people." Dr. Shine gave a big smile and said "well aint' that a coincidence. You see, that's what I do too! I shine shoes but what I really do here is work my special magic to find the spark inside people so when they leave me they can shine on their own. My goal is to change lives one shoe-shine at a time. Everyone's got that spark in them somewhere...but sometimes they don't know it...or they forgot it. Too many folks spend their lives keepin' it hid up inside of them...I'm just the shoe-shine guy. So, they're mo' likely to tell me what's most likely goin' on...I tell 'em they just gotta be real, let that spark light 'em up, that if they do that, they gonna light up their whole world.
Dr. Hallowell then asked Dr. Shine why he had the walker. "Oh, that old thing...it's because I have M.S. My doc says I should quit this job but I tell him no way, this is my best therapy."
|
SHINE |
After this encounter, Dr. Hallowell changed the title of his book. The title had nothing to do with billionaires, a Purple Heart hero, or other famous people. Instead he named his book "Shine" and dedicated it to Dr. Shine. |
DR. SHINE IS A MODEL OF ACHIEVING PEAK PERFORMANCE |
The next Marvelous Mondays will discuss Dr. Hallowell's 5 steps to achieve peak performance and you will see how Dr. Shine followed each of the 5 steps.

EXERCISE |
This next week I invite you to reflect on the following:
1. Notice whether you are shining in your career, personal life, and relationships?
2. Notice whether you are helping others shine in their careers, personal life, or in their relationships?
3. Do you think you have a spark that you don't know about or that you have forgotten? Are you keeping it inside of you?
I coach people in finding their spark and helping them shine. I am available to assist you.

"It's about the shine I put on the person. I reach out. Every time you're with a person, you've got a big chance. I say don't miss it." -Dr. Shine from Shine by Edward Hallowell.
