More than $47,000 Awarded for Nonpoint Source Pollution Prevention Educational Mini-grants

Pennsylvania's County Conservation Districts received more than $47,000 for 27 projects in 24 counties that promote water pollution prevention strategies through the Non-point Source (NPS) Pollution Prevention Educational Mini-Grant Program.

 

"We are pleased to have the opportunity to work with Pennsylvania's conservation districts to implement projects throughout the commonwealth that improve the quality of life for our families," said Robert Maiden, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts (PACD). "The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has generously provided this funding which is an investment in clean water for our communities."

 

Funding for the grants, up to $2,000 each, is provided through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act, administered by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Early Bird Registration Discount for the 2013 Joint Annual Conference Ends This Friday!

Early bird clip art The early bird deadline for the 2013 Joint Annual Conference is this Friday, June 13. Be an early bird and take advantage of the reduced registration rate! All registrations made online through June 14 will qualify for the $30 registration fee, which is a $15 discount. Sending your registration through the regular mail? All forms postmarked by June 14 will still qualify.

 

This year, conference attendees can learn how to avoid and recognize the symptoms of Lyme Disease, get the inside track on Public Participation and Legislative Effectiveness from former PANO Executive Director Joe Geiger, and tour the Marlboro Mushrooms farm and solar power system. In addition, this is a great opportunity to network with other conservation district professionals in between sessions, over dinner or breakfast, or during our movie-themed hospitality suite on Monday night. Register for 2013 Educator Conference Today!

EE Conference logo Want to join a day of networking and resource sharing in the field of environmental education? Then the one-day Environmental Educator Conference is the place you want to be on June 19! The conference is taking place at the Benjamin Olewine III Nature Center, Wildwood Park, 100 Wildwood Way, Harrisburg, PA 17110. 

 

There is $25 fee which covers program materials, lunch and refreshments. The first 35 conservation district staff to register will be reimbursed for mileage (up to $50).

Volunteer Schedule for 2013 Ag Progress Days

cow clipart Ag Progress Days will run from August 13 through 15 this year. PACD is need of volunteers to assist with booth coverage on these days:

 

Tuesday, August 13 (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.)

  • First Shift: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. - one volunteer needed
  • Second Shift: 1 - 5 p.m. - one volunteer needed

Wednesday, August 14 (9 a.m. - 8 p.m.)

  • First Shift: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. - one volunteer needed
  • Second Shift: 1 - 5 p.m. - two volunteers needed
  • Third Shift: 5 -8 p.m.- two volunteers needed

Thursday, August 15 (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.)

  • Second Shift: 12:30 - 4 p.m. - one volunteer needed

PACD Poster Contest Deadline is approaching! 

http://www.nacdnet.org/stewardship/2013 The National Association of Conservation Districts's (NACD) Annual Poster Contest will accept posters based on the theme from NACD Stewardship Week, "Where Does Your Water Shed?" The district may send the county's first place winning posters, one per division, to the PACD office at 25 N. Front St., Harrisburg, PA 17101. PACD will facilitate the state level judging and send those winners on to the national competition. Entries must be received by the PACD office no later than June 30. PACD Staff Member Tours Stroud Water Research Center

PACD Director of Communications Shannon Wehinger visited the Stroud Water Research Center  on June 6. A session was held on Stream Ecological Services and Forest riparian buffers followed by a tour of the facility. Wehinger is pictured on the green roof of the new education center which is LEED Platinum certified. She hopes to work with Stroud to identify future educational opportunities for district staff.

National Conservation Awards: Nominations Now Open

NACD logo Each year, NACD offers the opportunity for national recognition of an individual, business, agency or organization for outstanding work and leadership in soil and water conservation.

 

The awards are the NACD Distinguished Service Award and the NACD Friend of Conservation Award. Click here to read more. Nominations are due August 31. 

Lackawanna County Conservation District Receives Environment Education Grant

The Lackawanna County Conservation District received a $2,373 environmental education grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to plant habitat gardens at Riverside East and Carbondale Area elementary schools.

 

The students were involved in the design and planting phases of the project, which provided an opportunity for them to learn about local wildlife and the surrounding habitat. In Carbondale, high school students worked with the elementary youngsters on the project and J.S. Wright Excavating and Underground Utilities of Carbondale donated time and equipment for the venture. At Riverside East, students, parents and community volunteers worked on the garden project, and Rich Grzyboski Landscaping of Moosic donated mulch and top soil.

Pennsylvania Rivers Month

Rivers month Pennsylvania is home to more than 45,000 miles of rivers and streams. Residents rely on these waters for many uses included recreation and health. June is Pennsylvania Rivers Month and is a time to remember and protect the importance of rivers in our area.
