Sullivan Conservation District Helps Farmers Test Soil
| |
 | Mark Madden, Penn State Cooperative Extension Educator, leads a workshop on Soil Sampling and Testing on Sept. 13, 2012 at the Sullivan County Ag Resources Center. |
The Sullivan County Conservation District provided each farmer in the county who had undergone a farm visit under the Chesapeake Bay Program with a complimentary Penn State Soil Sample Test Kit. In partnership with Penn State Extension, two workshops were held to educate farmers on soil sampling and reviewing the results.
The "Soil Sample Kits for Ag Compliance" project also distributed 57 soil test kits. Using these test kits, farmers can look at their soils needs for nutrients and only apply what the crops require to avoid over-fertilizing which protects water quality and saves the farmer money.
Financial and other support for this project is provided by the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts, Inc. through a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act, administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
