FROM THE HEART         NEWS FROM KIDS FIRST
SEPTEMBER 2013

Greetings to our friends and supporters,

I certainly hope your summer has been rejuvenating and you are all ready to jump in to the full calendar that Fall inevitably presents.  Every year at this time we notice that the phone starts ringing more frequently here at Kids First, and classes start filling up as parents often find they can no longer put off that call.  It may sound sad, but it's also an encouraging trend to see that parents are reaching out for help instead of just soldiering through as they once did.  Seeking supportive and educational resources for themselves and their children is the best step they could be taking to help their families cope with the many challenges that divorce and separation bring.

To that end, September at Kids First brings not only the Saturday morning co-parenting Kids First Program, but the monthly Separation Divorce & Dads group (with a new format featuring guest speakers), the six-week after school support groups for kids, the four-week Next Step Program: Putting Conflict Aside, and the nine-week ICOPE (Intensive Co-Parenting Education) program.  We are also offering a free evening workshop exploring The Impact of Domestic Violence on Children.  The calendar below will tell you all the details you need to know to register for these programs.

So don't hesitate to pick up that phone and start your Fall off on the right foot!

Warmest regards,

Peg Libby

Executive Director

Lesbian and Gay Couples: Issues of Divorce  blending
by Liz Winfeld, FA

In this article, I will explore what the issues are for gay and lesbian couples in partnerships, unions, registered relationships or state-legalized marriages who have kids and who break up.

The best answer, where the children of a couple who are parting ways are concerned, is that the best interests of the kids should come first. I don't think anyone much disagrees with that whether the couple in question is gay or straight.

But are the rules of the game different for gay couples who are breaking up or divorcing when it comes to what decisions they can make about their kids?  It turns out that there are some things to consider.
