I don't believe in luck

I noticed a 4-leaf clover charm hanging off of my black handbag the other day. This prompted me to think about LUCK.

Has anyone ever said to you, "You're so lucky" as they point out a specific situation you're experiencing, or a certain item you own? Maybe they say it as they're in your beach house ("You're so lucky") ... maybe they say it as they allude to your job or career ("You're so lucky") ... maybe they say it because you have a perfectly toned, slim and muscular body ("You're so lucky"). Could be they say it as you're packing for an exotic vacation destination ("You're so lucky").

I don't believe in luck, snippeteers. Nope. I do believe though, in "creation." I believe in "attraction." And I believe in "attitude." Any good thing that we think "just happens" to people does not "just happen." Those people CREATE the situation. As my husband says,"You gotta make your break." He should know; he was a professional baseball player for 15 seasons. Did that "just happen" to him? Oh no. Hubby played very very hard for many years as a kid, then as a young adult, to learn the game and be the best player he could before he broke into the Major Leagues. He attracted and created that baseball career - that situation.

Did my gorgeous friend with the perfectly toned body wake up so muscular one day? Oh no. She's out there baby - she's paddle-boarding and hand-standing and taking the toughest levels of yoga class ... SIX DAYS a week. She's eating correctly and nourishing her muscles and bones to maintain those results. She's not just LUCKY to have that perfectly sculpted body. She created it.

Did LUCK hand my friend with the large beautiful Florida house on the water, a pool and a boat dock nestled under palm trees? Oh no. That friend WORKED HARD for years as a CFO in a giant corporation to earn her way; she was smart with her finances as she saved and invested. THEN she was able to buy that large beautiful house in which she solely raises her son while taking a break from the corporate world. LUCK had no hand in it. She created her blessed situation.

What about the opposite word? UNLUCKY. People often call themselves that ... Unlucky in love. Unlucky in golf. Unlucky in life. My brother Danny often wins money in raffles - many many MANY times; he's also good at winning money at the casino. I say it is his WINNING attitude that attracts the money. He must believe he WILL win - and so he does. On the flip side, if someone never wins at the casino, does that mean they are UNLUCKY? Or are they just outputting a downer attitude of feeling that way?

Do you believe in LUCK? (and UNLUCKY) Are we lucky by happenstance or did we create the good stuff?

snippets standing ovation

As I was attending a church fair in Florida last weekend, I discovered a booth of jewelry, scarves, journals and accessories, products handcrafted by women in Third World countries ... women who are trying to dig their way out of poverty, trying to feed their babies and kids, and trying to take care of their households among slummy conditions which you and I cannot envision.

Women around the world live in slums, work in sweatshops, and are victims of the sex trade.
These women don't want charity.
They want opportunity.

(from Trades of Hope brochure)

Did I need a new beaded necklace or three more pairs of earrings? Absolutely not. But I bought the items for the cause, and also because the sweet and wonderful "compassionate entrepreneur" named Kim standing behind the booth was too irresistible as she relayed her passion for the displayed wares and her fresh only-2-month-old career. [That's what this company titles their reps - compassionate entrepreneurs - do you LOVE that???]

Kim and I chatted easily as she told me she's the mom of grown kids and felt she no longer had "a purpose." She also admitted "I'm not a good sales person" and yet, after discovering Trades of Hope and launching herself as one of its reps, she fell in love with the cause and felt alive again. [I said to her, "You seem to be a great sales person to me!"]

"Working with Trades of Hope," said Kim, "I have finally found my true calling in life - helping to empower other women out of poverty. The company really is doing amazing things around the world."

Here's Kim loving her work

Kim was so passionate describing the organization, interesting things the items were made from, and the important work that Trades of Hope offers for women around the world. How could I NOT buy from her?

I am sharing Trades of Hope for 4 reasons:
  • in case you're interested in shopping these well-made products (click to shop)
  • in case you're looking for a new opportunity/career
  • if case you'd like to host a party for one of the "compassionate entrepreneurs"
  • and because we are women helping women

Snippeteers - did you get your girlfriend fix this week??? Here's a little poem I wrote after I did ...

Nothing like quality girlfriend time ...

a little bit of laughter,
a little bit of tears,
a little bit of therapy to chat about the years.

a little bit of exercise,
a little bit of wine,
a little bit of beach to pass away some time

a little bit of coffee,
a little kayak ride as well,
girlfriend time is soothing,
there's no better
time to gel

"I just read your
SNIPPETS from England. It reminded me how stressed and rushed I'd been at home in Florida. It's so peaceful here (my other home) and reading your piece, I made a decision not to let that happen again. Ha! As if, but I'll try."

"Thanks I needed this today. In fact, I need this almost every day. Off to put on another hat."
~ BARBARA R

"How I needed that today! I get so frustrated juggling the job duties, plus the wife / household duties, plus the mom duties, and the grandma duties (also like mom duties) and worry that I am so stretched thin, I am going to split right down the middle! I love the mantra: I'm doing the best I can, and that's all I can do.
Thank you!"

 thoughts about
prayer flares

"I'm sure that others, as I, always READ through the Prayer Flares and our hearts go out to each one asking for prayer. But how often do we really stop and pray for these dear people? We don't have to get fancy or even take a long time. God knows our hearts and hears our pleas. It can be as simple as 'Lord have mercy on these people. Comfort them and meet their needs. Draw them unto you so they may feel your love, comfort, and peace. In Jesus' Name, Amen.' James 5:16 [paraphrased] your prayers are powerful and can help a lot."

"Your SNIPPETS are always great reminders that I sooo need! Today I especially enjoyed the 'Superhero Stance!' I watched that episode of Grey's Anatomy and applauded the Superhero part. I am going to print that quote and tape it to my bathroom mirror, and read every morning from now on! Thanks!"
