Longhorn Sighting: Dallas-Ft.Worth (DFW) Airport

There is no better way to welcome visitors to Dallas than with an iconic Texas Longhorn.  This one was featured in a wall of windows in a Texas souvenir shop, on the B concourse.  A nice place to pass your time while you wait for your luggage.

Send us your favorite unique Longhorn photos!
We would love to share some of them here in the
ITLA's E-Drover.

Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Association meets

The final meeting of Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Association was held on Saturday November 15, 2014. After the Secretary's report and Treasurer's report a review of the 2014 show was shared with those in attendance.

logo_ORVTLA.JPG The new location for the 2014 show had proven to be very successful. We had good newspaper coverage by local papers, support by the local visitor's bureau, help from the fairgrounds people, the best general public attendance we have seen in years, a group of quality Texas Longhorn Cattle and a judge that was a pleasure to work with. A great job by ORVTLA members doing whatever it takes to get the job done. Thanks to you all!

Our 2014 Field Day was held in September at Habrun's Arena, Millersburg, Ohio.  There, a clinic on Texas Longhorn cattle's use as roping cattle was presented by Larry Habrun and friends. Again, a larger than expected attendance by the public at both the show and field day resulted in the sale of cattle to new Texas Longhorn people.

Moving into 2015, The Ohio Cattleman's Beef Expo will be in mid-March at the Ohio Expo Center. We will maintain a booth again this year and put together some items to use for handouts during the Expo. Andrew Morris will coordinate our efforts again in 2015.

Bovine Bingo will be part of our fund raising effort in 2015, and we'll be looking for a calf to be the main attraction for that event to be awarded to its new owner at the 2015 show.

The 18th annual show will be held at the Wayne County Fairgrounds, Wooster, Ohio, on July 18th, 2015. There will be a full show of haltered and non-haltered classes. Show plans are well under way for a bigger and better show again in 2015. Co-chairs for the show are Barry Elam and Tim Mills along with all the great help from our members in 2015. More info can be found at ITLA's web site under events and also on Facebook.

Darol Dickinson also gave a short and helpful lesson on coyote control during the meeting that has proven to be very successful when other methods have failed.

Lastly, we held our election of officers, Andrew Morris- President, Carice Jameson- Vice President, Bob Snyder- Treasurer, Kari Norris- Secretary, and Directors will be Brett Walters and Deb Mills - one year terms, Linda Pierce-two year term, and Barry Elam and Andy Dunmire- three year terms.

2014 was a great year for us, thanks to all of the hard work by so many. Even non-members kicked in and did a lot of very helpful things during the year.

To all of our Longhorn Friends, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Ohio River Valley!

Keep an Eye on Your Cattle

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Kansas officials say record cattle prices have led to an increase in cattle theft reports.

Authorities say five Longhorn cows and a bull, worth at least $10,000, were recently taken from a pasture in southeast Kingman County. A Reno County producer says four 600-pound calves were stolen this month.

The Kansas Animal Health Commissioner tells the Hutchinson News he noticed an uptick in theft reports funneled through his agency's brands department.

On Monday, the Kansas attorney general and the state's agriculture department announced an agreement to form a new investigative unit to combat the increase in cattle thefts. It will assist local law enforcement agencies in their suspected cattle theft investigations.

With high cattle prices, rustlers hit Reno, Kingman counties

ITLA Judging Clinics improve the Industry

2014 was a good year for the ITLA, improving the Longhorn Industry by ITLA-sponsored Judging Clinics, including online webinars. If you did not get a chance to attend, plan to attend one for next year.  And remember, refresher courses are required every two years.

The ultimate goal is to not only produce professional exhibitors, but also to produce good, sound, structurally correct cattle that will compete in the sale ring, on the range and in the show ring. The show ring is a tool to enlighten cattle people to the many true qualities of Texas Longhorn cattle, create marketing opportunities and reward superior cattle.

Chewing the Cud

Old Jeb was getting on in years.  His family finally talked him in to taking him in to the doctor for a long overdue check up.

The elderly grandfather was admittedly nervous when the doctor comes in and sits down to tell him the prognosis, "all you're test results came back and I'm afraid I have two pieces of bad news," said the doctor.

Old Jeb, says "Give it to me straight, Doc."

"Well, you have Diabetes and you have Alzheimer's."

Jeb breathes a sigh of relief and then replies."Whew!  Well, at least I don't have Diabetes!"
