Longhorns led the way to open California's City of Folsom's Pro Rodeo this July.  They led the way through historic Folsom to kick off the annual cattle drive in honor of the Folsom Pro Rodeo on July 2nd

The cattle drive featured Longhorn cattle, cowboys, the historic Wells Fargo Stagecoach, rodeo clowns and music.

Send us your favorite unique Longhorn photos!
We would love to share some of them here in the

Service, Sponsors and Sacrifice

Vice President ITLA

It's been my privilege to attend several Longhorn events this year. I judged open shows and futurities and was just a spectator at other events. Every show was exceptional. The dedication and plain ole hard work that goes into hosting a Longhorn show was evident at each one.

My family and I recently traveled to Frederick, Maryland where I judged a NETLA show. Honestly, the north east has some of the most enthusiastic, committed folks in our industry. We had a great time with a delightful group of people who are excited about attending the Longhorn Extravaganza, October 17 and 18. With the help of generous sponsors, NETLA already raised the funds to send their youth (and there are many) by plane to OKC. The adults will make the 1,700 mile trip hauling several trailers of cattle. They are ready to compete and fellowship with other Longhorn lovers.

My take-aways from the shows this year, especially from the NETLA show, are service, sponsors and sacrifice. In order to preserve and promote the Longhorn breed we so appreciate, we need all three. It takes volunteers who are willing to step up, roll up their selves and go to work. We need breeders to sponsor both our local ITLA affiliate shows and the Championship Show. Sacrifice is probably the greatest virtue. All the hard work we put into our herds would not be appreciated without sacrifice. Each sponsor and each participant gives willingly to make each event possible. We all need to recognize and thank the breeders and the show circuit for promoting the finest Longhorns every year in the U.S. and everywhere Longhorn cattle are raised and shown.

I look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones at the Championship Show in October. Thank you to all our sponsors and participants. Together we will make this the best show ever.

MTLA Holds Annual Show in Lawrenceburg, Indiana

The Dearborn County Fairgrounds, located on the Indiana/Ohio/Kentucky line just outside Cincinnati was host for the MTLA Show for our third straight year. Volunteers from the Midwest Texas Longhorn Association began arriving on Thursday to convert the 4-H Show Arena to make a suitable arena for Longhorns. In all, over 50 head of Registered Texas Longhorns delighted the public assembled to see America's Original Cattle Breed.

Danielle Andrews came up from Texas to judge the event. She had a busy day following flight issues that sent her through New York and with just a few hours' sleep was faced with a Youth Show, Showmanship, haltered and non-haltered.

The weather was beautiful and everything went according to schedule. Even the Calf donated by Between the Bridges Cattle Farm cooperated by selecting her new owner by selecting the square in Bovine Bingo with a direct hit.

As always, everyone had a great time and wanted many more events like this each year. Third time Show Chair Ed Lewis just rolled his eyes as he knows what it takes to pull something like this off.

Just Another Sign of Summer

"We all know that Texas Longhorns have a great disposition and get along with people, other cattle and just about every animal there is.

We also know that they readily adapt to their current surroundings.  With the evolution of showing cattle now including horn measuring contests, traditional shows, futurities, performance demonstrations and even contests to guess the square they will poop in, we wondered what the next innovation might be.

One Midwestern ITLA member had suffered record amounts of rain this year, and decided to take advantage of his flooded pastures to work with his prized animals, with remarkable results.

It seems the next logical event in the evolution of America's Original Cattle Breed might include synchronized swimming and jumping competitions.

He will be ready for the next Extravaganza." :)

Ohio River Texas Longhorn Association Meeting
logo_ORVTLA.JPG
The latest meeting of the Ohio River Texas Longhorn Assoc. was held on Sat. June 28th . Longhorn hamburger and hotdogs were grilled along with some other goodies by Andy Dunmire, and several others carried in covered dishes and drinks.

The main purpose of the meeting was to wrap up some last minute things before our 17th annual show on July 19th, take entries from members and gather sponsor ads for the show book.

This year's show has been moved to the Wayne County Fairgrounds, Wooster, Ohio. This put us in an area of Ohio where there has been more interest in Texas Longhorn Cattle. Entry numbers are up this year with several people bringing cattle to the show that have never shown at a Texas Longhorn show before. This year will be a first for us to offer exhibition crossbred classes, so far several Longhorns crossed with Shorthorns, Angus, Brahmas and Watusi are on their way to their first cattle show.

Gretchen Scott will showcase her cooking talents as she prepares the Friday evening meal for exhibitors, followed by some fun and messy activities for the youth.

After taking care of business for the show, plans for this year's field day got under way with the date being set for Saturday, September 20th, to be held at the Larry Habrun roping arena in Millersburg, Ohio. There we will learn about the training that takes place after cattle are purchased by ropers.

Lastly, everybody was reminded that at our last meeting of the year we will hold an election with all four elected positions open and two director positions also open at the end of this year.

Chewing the Cud...

Kristy was late to feed, her blonde curls bounced as she drove through the residential neighborhood in the ranch's pickup at 25 miles an hour over the speed limit.

Red and blue lights quickly showed up in her rear view mirror and a local police cruiser pulled her over.

The female police officer who walked up to the car also happened to be a blonde. She asked for Kristy's driver's license. The blonde driver searched frantically in her purse for a while and finally said to the blonde policewoman, "What does a driver's license look like?"

Irritated, the blonde cop said, "Don't be a silly, it's got your picture on it!"

Again, Kristy frantically searched her purse again and found a small, rectangular mirror down at the bottom. She held it up to her face and said, "Aha! This must be my driver's license", then handed it to the blonde policewoman.

The blonde cop looked in the mirror, muttered "I can't believe this," and handed it right back to the driver. "You're free to go," said the officer, "and if I had known you were a police officer too, we could have avoided all of this."
