Diabetes Prevention Program Celebrates Success
In the fight against diabetes, we're equipping employees to win the battle. In a recent session of the Diabetes Prevention Program in Hampton Roads, we had 19 participants lose a total of 161 pounds. They went through 16 core sessions from February to May. All earned the well-coached badge on BonSecoursWellness.com.
These employees met together one hour a week at Maryview Medical Center, Harbour View and surrounding sites. One session was held during lunch and another was from 5 to 6 p.m. to make it more convenient to various schedules. Question: Do you have any exercises I could do at my desk to burn some extra calories without bothering my co-workers?
Answer: It's great to fit in a few minutes of exercise while you're at work. Getting up from your desk at least once an hour to do some type of exercise is advised.
If you're able to do squats or other legwork while at your office chair, go for it! You can hold onto your chair and try squats (just make sure it's not a rolling chair), or you can sit at your desk, squeeze your glutes, and kick your leg out for quad extensions. You can also try wall push-ups or arm circles and calf raises.
Also, don't be afraid to take the long way to the bathroom. There's an added incentive to taking the scenic route. If you're on our medical plan, you can earn your "Healthy Habits" Incentive by logging your steps. That comes along with $300 added to your HRA card!
