Your Next Career Steps:
Consider the Possibilities

Pensive Business Woman Stands in Front of Question Marks on a Blackboard Carpe Diem! It means "seize the day," and it's a good mantra for your mid-year review. The reviews are going on through April 8.

Jennifer Pitts, program lead, Talent Readiness, says that while employees are generally good about their check-in goals, they often don't spend enough time thinking about their professional development goals.

But that's important. Bon Secours leaders want you to discuss your goals, and they can suggest some activities that can help you achieve them.

"Ask yourself how to move the needle from what you currently can do to what you'd like to be able to do in the future," Pitts advises. "It's about taking the time to focus on it. Eventually in the long run, it will help."

Finding the time to consider your future can be hard enough in today's busy health care environment, she acknowledges, but it's important to slow down occasionally. "It's hard to be engaged and move forward in your work if you don't take time to take a breather and make time for yourself."

Our annual Gallup Employee Engagement survey will be held April 18-May 1.

DePaul Medical Center Adds
Robotic Surgical System

DePaul Medical Center Robotic Surgery Team

DePaul Medical Center recently acquired the
da Vinci® Xi Surgical System, to complement the
da Vinci® Si robotic surgical system already in use there.

This next-generation robotic surgical system can be used across a wide spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and is optimal for highly complex surgeries in which instruments must be able to reach up and down and across large areas of the body, such as the abdomen or chest.

Seventeen surgical specialists affiliated with DePaul Medical Center are trained to perform robotic-assisted surgeries using the da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system. Bon Secours is using the da Vinci Xi surgical system to perform a number of procedures including gynecological, colorectal, urologic and general surgeries. Read more.

Doctor Ernesto Luciano Perez
Dr. Luciano-Perez

Runners in this weekend's Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach are in good hands. Dr. Ernesto Luciano-Perez, an orthopaedic surgeon and medical director of sports medicine, Bon Secours Virginia Orthopaedic Specialists, will serve as medical director of the marathon, half-marathon and 8K races, an annual event that draws nearly 25,000 participants.

2016 marks the sixth year Dr. Luciano and his team have volunteered at the race. "We have a great team of physicians working with us, which makes the operations of the medical tent essentially effortless," he said. "I think we've hit our stride in great part due to the tireless effort of Cynthia Goode, Justin Ferrell, and Dr. Jason McHugh."

2016 Shamrock Marathon Dr. Luciano is proud that so many Bon Secours employees ---  more than 100 ---  volunteer during the race weekend. "We have volunteers from nursing, athletic training, physical therapy and many others who get involved in the operations of the race." That kind of involvement, he said, contributes to the success of the race each year.

During the races, Dr. Luciano and a team of physicians, nurses and volunteers from Bon Secours In Motion will staff the medical tent, a triage tent, and a blister tent on the beach along the race course.

"It's very rewarding to be part of such a high-energy type of event," he said. "People are very appreciative of the time and effort we put in, both the runners and the event staff. It's a lot of fun, and we look forward to being involved year after year."
