National Nurses Week is May 6-12
|

National Nurses Week starts tomorrow. The 2015 theme, "Ethical Practice. Quality Care," recognizes the importance of ethics in nursing and acknowledges the strong commitment, compassion and care nurses display in their practice and profession. The theme is an important part of ANA's 2015 Year of Ethics outreach to promote and advocate for the rights, health and safety of nurses and patients.
Look for activities in our facilities, coordinated by Nursing Administration and Service Excellence leaders. Learn more.
Did you Know? May 12, the final day of National Nurses Week, is the birthday of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910). The English nurse became known as the founder of professional nursing, especially due to her pioneering work during the Crimean War. Due to her habit of making rounds at night, Nightingale became known as "The Lady with the Lamp." |

Barbara Sorbello,
RN, PhD, Dean of Nursing, Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing
|
"National Nurses Week is celebrated each year between May 6 and May 12," said Barbara Sorbello, Dean of Nursing, Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing. This year's theme, "Ethical Practice. Quality Care," identifies essential components of professional nursing practice. Nurses deliver care in a manner that preserves and protects healthcare consumer dignity, autonomy, rights, values and beliefs. Nurses also serve as advocates to improve the quality, safety and effectiveness of care and health care outcomes. As we celebrate National Nurses Week, we celebrate and appreciate our nurses who go above and beyond to impact the lives we serve on a daily basis; those nurses who served in the past and upon whose shoulders we stand; and the nurses we are educating and preparing to enter professional practice and lead the profession in the future." |

No One-Size-Fits-All Way to Lose Weight
Dr. Anthony Terracina, Director of Bariatrics at the Bon Secours Surgical Weight Loss Center at Mary Immaculate Hospital, knows that losing weight can be a challenge. There's no one-size-fits-all way to do it.
"A third of the U.S. population is obese, and that problem is not going away," he notes. "Obesity has overtaken smoking as the No. 1 preventable health problem."
For some people, eating healthier and increasing exercise can be enough to achieve a healthy weight. But others need more drastic measures. Read more about surgical weight loss at Bon Secours.
