Caring for One of Our Own
What does employee engagement look like?
Tamika Gonzales was 34 weeks pregnant when on May 16, 2013, she went to take the annual Personal Health Assessment screening through Employee Wellness.
She credits that PHA and all the care she received after it with saving her baby's life.
Gonzales, an LPN, actually felt fine, but her blood pressure reading was above normal at 138/108. She left the screening, went back to work and told her office manager at Memorial Medical Center internal medicine, who encouraged her to check it out further. A physician there tested her blood pressure again, and it was even higher. Gonzales was immediately sent to her OB/Gyn. Again, her blood pressure was higher, and she was admitted to the hospital.
"I was floored because I felt fine in addition to no notable complications," Gonzales remembered.
Her lab tests showed she had little amniotic fluid, the baby was breach, she had severe preeclampsia and her blood pressure remained high. She was scheduled for an emergency C-section, and the baby was delivered.
"My OB/Gyn indicated that if I had waited until my next scheduled visit my son would have been stillborn ... It was nothing short of a miracle. I feel extremely blessed to have such a great group of peers, co-workers and work associates. I was proud to be a patient and an employee --- this is what our mission is about."
After a week in the neonatal intensive care unit, baby Cayden was able to go home. He is now a healthy almost 2-year-old. Gonzalez said she definitely felt that her supervisor, her team and everyone at Bon Secours cared for her and her baby.
"It made me very excited to be part of Bon Secours as a patient and an employee."

"As a Bon Secours leader, one of the things I appreciate about my job is being able to encourage and develop my staff as they grow in the therapy field. The staff strive to do their best each day and get excited to share their accomplishments with me and their colleagues. We have a very nurturing atmosphere and the staff treat each other as family. They enjoy coming to work and seeing their best friends. It is a gift to work with such a great organization and the people within it."

"When you're kind to someone and make them feel welcome, they are more than likely to return to us for their care. And the more they return to us for their health care, the more of an opportunity it is for us to minister to them as well. That's how we make our mission stronger."
