Quote of the Week

In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.

Ahlers Training

WMHS will be hosting multiple Ahlers trainings in the new year. We have heard from many TX folks that there is a need for new staff as well as refresher for current staff. Please add your availability to the Doodle poll here by Friday, December 5. http://doodle.com/eesg3st83r4sbpvf We will likely host 2 sessions a week for 2.5 weeks starting in mid-January so I am asking about your availability for the days of the week and times listed in the doodle.

We will be recording these webinar sessions for future viewing. All TX staff are invited and encouraged to participate. There will be 5 trainings as follows:

  • Billing (2 sessions)
  • Scheduling (1 session)
  • CVR entry (1 session)
  • Web reports (1 session)
Title X Orientation and Plan First

There have been a number of requests recently for a Title X Orientation including a brief overview of Plan First for new and current Title X staff. In the past, we used to direct you all to Cardea Services for an online Title X training. However, this training has been removed from their website and we have not heard when a new one will become available.

WMHS would like to offer a Title X and Plan First Orientation webinar in January which will be available to all staff and be recorded for future viewing. The training will be facilitated by myself and Helen McCaffrey.

Please fill out this Doodle so that I can pick the best time for this training.  http://doodle.com/8xp2dt52v6nq9s9s.

Learn More about Clinical Documentation Improvement to Support ICD-10 Readiness

With less than one year until the October 1, 2015, ICD-10 compliance date, now is the time to focus on clinical documentation improvement (CDI).

Preventing Pregnancy Among Older Teens

Preventing Pregnancy Among Older Teens

The National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL) issued this brief in September 2014. The document recognizes that teen pregnancy rates are most often calculated for women between the ages of 15 and 19, but a closer look shows the birth rate for teens ages 18 to 19 to be nearly four times that of their younger peers In addition, the birth rate among older teens is declining more slowly-falling 50 percent since 1991-compared to the nearly 70 percent decline for those ages 15 to 17. The NCSL brief states that in to dramatically shift teen pregnancy rates, state legislatures are increasingly devoting attention and resources to effective strategies that prevent pregnancy among this population.

Two Decades of Data on Sexuality Education Conflicts
Two Decades of Data on Sexuality Education Conflicts

For the past 20 years, SIECUS has released annual Controversy reports that document, monitor, and analyze sexuality education controversies that occurred during the previous school year. This cumulative body of work has been compiled into a new Sexuality Education Controversy Database (Controversy Database) that gives sexuality education stakeholders the ability to identify trends, patterns, and key lessons to inform future advocacy. It also provides key information about each controversy including the school year it occurred, type of controversy, locations, and outcomes.

Social Media and Contraceptive Counseling
Use of Social Media Shows Promise as Approach to Supplementing Contraceptive Counseling

In this study, published in the latest issue of Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, women who received one-on-one contraceptive counseling and then obtained supplementary information from a specially designed Facebook page scored higher on contraceptive knowledge, and registered larger gains in knowledge, than a group who received the same supplementary information from a patient education pamphlet. The authors suggest that social media may be effective adjuncts to clinical contraceptive counseling.

Rural Adolescents' Access to Adolescent Friendly Health Services
Rural Adolescents' Access to Adolescent Friendly Health Services

The purpose of this study, published in the Journal of Pediatric Health Care, was to assess rural North Dakota adolescents' experiences in accessing adolescent-friendly health services and to examine the relationship between rural adolescents' communication with health care providers and risk behaviors. Rural adolescents reported high access to acceptable primary health care services but low levels of effective health care services. Participant report of engaging in high-risk behaviors was associated with having received information from health care providers about the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. These findings reveal missed opportunities for primary care providers in rural settings to provide fundamental health promotion to adolescents.
