The Day of Pentecost: Whitsunday

Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life
to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy
Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the
preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the
earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever

and ever. Amen.

What's the Difference between the E-News and E-Chronicle?

The E-News comes out twice a month, usually the closest business day to the 1st and 16th. It contains announcements for upcoming events and other important information that needs to get out.

The E-Chronicle, on the other hand, has less urgency. It comes out every other month, and reports on events that have already taken place.  It may also feature special interest stories and reflections from folks around the Diocese.

We're here to help you spread the word about any events you have coming up (E-News), and also sharing the results with others in the Diocese (E-Chronicle). Send over your fliers, notices, photos and stories... you never know whose life you could impact or inspire!

To submit information for an upcoming event or to share photos and information on an event that has taken place, e-mail Communications.

Message from the Bishop:

Bishop's Bible Study is Discontinued
Bishop Fitzpatrick

Aloha,

I appreciate the positive response to the Bishop's Bible Study.  With Canon Liz's move to Ireland and the reorganization of the staff of the Office of the Bishop, I have decided trying to keep up the weekly lessons is not possible at this time.  I apologize to those who have participated for ending the study early. It has been suggested that I might try a shorter study at Advent or Lent of one of Paul's letters, the letter of James or one of the birth narratives in Matthew or Luke.  Teaching is one of my joys as Bishop and I want to engage in this project again.  So, for those who have joined me in this study, thank you and be assured the studies will return.

Again, I apologize for discontinuing this study early.

Blessings,
+Bob

The Right Reverend Robert L. Fitzpatrick

Editor's note:  Archived lessons are still available on the diocesan website HERE.

'Aha Mele Benefit Concert Series

All Saints' Episcopal Church in Kapa'a, Kaua'i, is hosting a series of benefit concerts to raise funding for the reconstruction of it's organ. The organ, which was installed in 1925, is the only true pipe organ remaining on Kaua'i, but weather and use have taken its toll and it is now in need of a new console. Members are trying to raise the nearly $150K needed for this project, and the concerts will help to raise awareness in the community as well as funds.

The first concert, being held on June 8, at 3:00 PM features the talented Paul Togioka and Ali'i Strings. The musicians are donating their time and talent toward this effort.  Although outdoor seating for the concert is free, a pre-concert reception at 2:00 PM that includes reserved indoor seating, is available for $50. For more information and to purchase tickets on-line or to make a donation, visit the event webpage HERE.

A Taste of EfM - Training July 24 - 26
By Peter Carson
EfM logo2
The Bible speaks clearly to our condition in modem life: We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every kind of doctrine...we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.  (Ephesians 4:14a, 15b)

In all aspects of our lives, there are bewildering choices to be made and none more than in the area of spirituality. We need practical tools that can help form us as Christians and enable us become more effective in our lives, which will also make us better able to reach others with the Good News.

Education for Ministry (EfM) is a very effective tool for formation and growth - actually, a whole toolkit. A program developed and overseen by the School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, EfM uses a multi-pronged approach to help us "grow up in every way into Christ".  Sewanee provides study materials and trained leadership. No background is necessary; this course is open to all adults.

Each EfM class is a mixture: a short worship session or meditation (selected and led by a different student each week), time for each student to discuss what he or she has discovered in the week's lesson (scripture, theology or church history), fellowship, and, most important of all, TR or theological reflection - a process for integrating what is learned into day-to-day living.

Theological Reflection is the heart of EfM. It's a way of turning a problem or situation over in the group's collective mind, delving deeper and deeper into the matter. Toward the end of the reflection, the group comes to a consensus about implications for future action, and sometimes builds a group prayer about the reflection.

In Theological Reflection people learn to come together and exchange views with others with respect for all, and become adept at using a powerful and practical tool for spiritual discernment.

If you believe EfM is right for your church you only need a trained EfM mentor to start a class.  A training session for EfM mentors requires 18 hours of participation in a training class.  We are holding a training class from July 24 through July 26.  If you or anyone at your church are interested in forming a class or if you have any questions about EFM, contact Peter Carson at (808) 754-3665, or e-mail
