Proper 28:

Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the  blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

What's the Difference between the E-News and E-Chronicle?

The E-News comes out twice a month, usually the closest business day to the 1st and 16th. It contains announcements for upcoming events and other important information that needs to get out.

The E-Chronicle, on the other hand, has less urgency. It comes out every other month, and reports on events that have already taken place.  It may also feature special interest stories and reflections from folks around the Diocese.

We're here to help you spread the word about any events you have coming up (E-News), and also sharing the results with others in the Diocese (E-Chronicle). Send over your fliers, notices, photos and stories... you never know whose life you could impact or inspire!

For more information on submitting information for an upcoming event click HERE. To share photos and information on an event that has taken place, click HERE.

The following is a message from Bishop Robert L. Fitzpatrick in response to the recent devastation in the Philippines caused by Super Typhoon Haiyan. A special webpage on the Diocesan website has been set-up with updates, resources and messages from the Bishop, and can be found by clicking on the READ MORE link below:

Prayers & Aid for Victims Super Typhoon Haiyan

Bishop FitzpatrickI call upon every congregation and individual Episcopalian to respond to the crisis in the Philippines caused by Super Typhoon Haiyan.

I encourage all congregations to take special collections for the next two Sundays (November 17 and 24), and to give all money collected at all Thanksgiving services in the Diocese, to the Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) fund for "Super Typhoon Haiyan Philippine Relief."

Gifts to this fund will support emergency relief and recovery efforts in the Philippines following Super Typhoon Haiyan. On the morning of November 8, 2013, Super Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the central Philippines, causing widespread damage and destruction.

Churches should collect all money and make checks payable and mailed directly to: Episcopal Relief & Development, Attn: "Super Typhoon Haiyan Philippine Relief", P.O. Box 7058, Merrifield, VA 22116-7058

Please do not send the money collected to the Bishop's Office. Send it to ERD so that it can be immediately put to good use. READ MORE...

Bishop's Christmas Card Contest Winner Announced
Congratulations to Portia Okamoto, a member of Epiphany Episcopal Church in Honolulu, for winning the Bishop's Christmas Card Contest!

The Bishop shared that all the submissions were excellent which made the choice difficult, and thanks all those who took the time to send in pictures.

Portia's winning photo was of a stained glass window of the Nativity located in Epiphany's nave. The stained glass is one of nine created for the church by renowned artist Erica Karawina. The faces in the windows were based on the students and teachers at Epiphany School at the time.

"As Fr. Linscott had relayed to us," explains Portia, "Erica was determined to include the children of Epiphany in her windows which explains Mary with an oriental face and eyes, baby Jesus wrapped in tapa print, and the 'kolohe' angel on the rooftop was [her] version of that little boy climbing the trees."

As for Portia, she has been attending Epiphany since she was 5 years old and is a choir member and part of the Aloha Committee. It's no surprise that she is also Epiphany's Church Photographer, "...since 2002, with a goal to record the history of Epiphany through pictures."

CONGRATULATIONS PORTIA! Keep up the great work!

What's Happening in The Episcopal Church?

Announcements from around The Episcopal Church...

Presiding Bishop on the Tragedy in the Philippines
Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori offers the following prayer for the people of the Philippines:

jefferts schori 2 O God our help in time of trouble, we pray for the Filipino people who have suffered this grievous natural disaster. We pray that survivors may find water, food, and shelter, and news of their missing loved ones. There is trauma and destruction in many places, and little news from some of the areas hardest hit. Give peace and confidence, O Lord, to those in the midst of the whirlwind. Open hearts and hands around the world to respond sacrificially to the urgent need. Help us to remember that we are connected, one to another, the living to the dead, the comfortable to the suffering, the peaceful to the worried and anxious. Motivate us to change our hearts, for our misuse and pollution of the earth you have given us to share has something to do with this disaster. Show us your suffering Son in the midst of this Calvary, that we might love one another as he has loved us. In your holy name we pray. Amen.

The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori
Presiding Bishop and Primate
The Episcopal Church

New National Poll Finds
Discrimination Prevalent in U.S.

[November 12, 2013] A new national poll commissioned by The Episcopal Church has found that nearly all Americans (98%) feel that there is at least some discrimination in the U.S. today. In addition, African-American respondents (49%) are three times as likely as white respondents (16%) and Hispanic respondents (11%) to feel there is a "great deal" of discrimination. Harris Interactive conducted the poll online in October among more than 2,000 U.S. adults.

"Despite major reforms, our culture continues to perpetuate discrimination in various forms," said Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori. "Our churches and communities are critical motivators in encouraging change in these issues toward greater parity and acceptance."

In spite of those findings, more than eight in 10 Americans agree that in the future, Americans will be more accepting of all races. Hispanic respondents (87%) are more likely to agree than African-American respondents (68%) and are somewhat more optimistic than white (84%) that Americans will be more accepting. READ MORE
