We're in the news! Yourist Studio Gallery profiled in The Daily
| Inside Yourist Studio Gallery
|
The Michigan Daily recently featured Yourist Studio Gallery in a lengthy article in its Arts section entitled "The Claymakers: Yourist Gallery takes ceramic art into a new generation." The article, by Akshay Seth, was published in the September 10 edition of The Daily and includes a video of activities at the studio. "Walking through the front doors of the Yourist Studio can best be described as entering what one considers an art studio is supposed to look like."
In the article, Kay speaks of the rewards and challenges of starting and running a studio and gallery devoted to ceramics. Community artists Marilyn Edington and and Darcy Bowden talk about what the studio, its classes, its facilities, and its community have meant to them. We only have one serious bone to pick with the article: our Odo is definitely not scruffy!

Slab building techniquesCreating a layered bowl
Jim Robison of Booth House Gallery in the UK demonstrates how he "builds up layers of interest" in a sheet of clay with a variety of techniques, including clay additions, textures, slips, and glazes, to create a stunning bowl. Robison also shows how he uses a simple nested wooden picture frame to shape his enhanced slab into a bowl.
By the way, if that wood graining tool Jim used intrigues you, they are available here at the studio for purchase.

Potter's quick tip
Dual-use ceramic ware
Q. I've been making lots of serving pieces that I use at home for daily and special meals, but some of them are big and I'm running out of space to store them. Any ideas?
A. Keep in mind that your serving pieces are not just functional ware, they're also works of art! So how about displaying your serving pieces on the wall when they aren't in use on the table? In a recent article, "A Smart Hanging System That Helps Functional Pottery Double as Ceramic Wall Art," Ceramics Art Daily contributor Annie Chrietzberg describes potter Cristine Boyd's clever system for making plates that can be hung as wall art without interfering with their use as serving pieces. A timely and useful idea.
Readers, if you have a pottery question for Kay, ask away. And if you want to revisit a past tip, you'll find earlier issues in our studio newsletter archive on the News and Events page of Yourist Studio Gallery web site.

How we celebrate
Pottery is for lovers
According to Wikipedia, anniversary celebrations originated during the Holy Roman Empire, "when husbands crowned their wives with a silver wreath on their twenty-fifth anniversary, or vicennalia, and a gold wreath on the fiftieth." Nowadays we celebrate anniversaries every year when they roll around, and there is a list of traditional gifts for each one. Pottery is the traditional gift for couples marking their ninth anniversary. If you're in the market for a ninth-anniversary present, how about giving the happy couple a beautiful, hand-made ceramic vase filled with birds of paradise, the traditional flower for this anniversary? Or, if your taste in gifts runs more to gemstones, choose a bauble of lapis lazuli (the traditional ninth-anniversary gemstone) and present it in a charming ceramic keepsake box.Of course, you don't have to wait for a ninth anniversary to give someone pottery. Pottery is a great gift at any time for any occasion.
