You're Welcome

It's gratitude time. This season encourages us to be thankful for our abundant lives.  It's become a time when we  throw out our sensibilities and over-consume, as if being abundant isn't enough. This time encourages consumption, whether it is food or plastic crap from China.  But, let's not go there.

One of my previous articles, that you can see here, talked about the benefits, and there are many, of merely saying "thank you."  Here's a bit:

Saying thank you is a way of conveying gratitude and there's been lots of research on its power. Studies have suggested that maintaining an attitude of gratitude can improve psychological, emotional and physical well-being.  Moreover, those that feel grateful have more energy, are more optimistic, have more social connections and are happier.  Want more?  Want to earn more money, sleep better, exercise more regularly and fight off colds?  Find a sense of gratitude.

On the end of each "thank you" there's the obligatory "you're welcome".  Sometimes, sometimes not.  Often it's just a nod or uh-huh or a sundry of 4 letter words, depending.  The Spanish speaking world say con placer or "with pleasure" or de nada or "it's nothing".

Adam Grant, Wharton professor and author of Give and Take, added some interest to the thank you response.  Grant offers comments by Robert Cialdini, author of Influence, who feels the thank you/you're welcome sets up a bit of a power play, tipping the power to the giver.  He suggests that In order to capitalize on this changed relationship, a response like "I know you'd do the same for me" is appropriate. This response offers the following:

1.  It conveys a relationship where we are comfortable asking for and receiving help and not keeping score.

2.  It communicates confidence that you're the kind of person that offers help when asked.

3.  A reciprocity is established, setting up a bit of obligation on the taker.

What about "You're welcome--I was happy to do it.  I know you'd do the same for me"?  Does that feel better?  Is it too much dialogue?  Awkward?  Again, it suggests a kind of relationship between the parties.

Adam Rifkin, named Fortune's best networker, adds a twist. Instead of suggesting you'd do the same for him, he widens the circle and says "I know you'd do the same for someone else".  Ah, now we're talking.  It implies that they are the kind of person that would help others.  Maybe it's a bit of a nudge, but it sets up an obligation to help others--a bit of a pay it forward.

From the article:  "Rifkin is more concerned about people paying it forward than paying it back.  In his view, every favor that he does is an opportunity to encourage other people to act more generously. That way, a broader range of people can benefit from his contributions".

Many from the "Comment" section on this article thought this reciprocity approach set up too much of a power play sounding instead of "I know you'd do the same for me" to "I expect you'd do the same for me".  One commenter says "Are you trying to turn 'you're welcome' into a fungible asset?".  Most simply liked  you're welcome.  Many offered that it shows humility and character, and implied respect and a willingness to assist.

What do you think?  Along with all the thank you's this holiday season, take a moment and think about your reply.  Is it genuine?  Do you want to elicit some action by suggesting that the receiver pay it forward?  I know the next time I have an opportunity to respond to a thank you, I'll pause for a moment and say "you're welcome."

Work-Out Clothes -  What Do You Wear?
I don't know what got over me, but some time ago, I became obsessed with yoga mats.  I wrote 5 articles on yoga mats, 3 reviews (there are more kinds of yoga mats than you can image), one on un-matting and one on mat etiquette.  If you are interested, and I don't blame you if you're not, you can go here and here and here and here and here.

Maybe I'll revisit mats again, but FIRST, let's talk about yoga clothes. Is it Lululemon, Athleta, or Lucy for you?  Or, what about Prana or Hard Tail.  Is it Target, Old Navy or the Gap?   Is it the fit, price, comfort, or material?
It doesn't have to specific to yoga.  Maybe it's Pilates or Nia or Acro Yoga or hip-hop at the gym..  .

Email me right here let me know what you wer and why.  I'll piece together an article or two (or 3 or 4).

Necessary Failure
Do not fear failure. Whatever happened in the past is past; do not worry about it happening again. Before you meet with success, failure is natural and necessary.

Master Sheng-Yen, "Being Natural"
happy hour
Be Happy on Friday's
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an
most-levels vinyasa flow class.

On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class.  Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day.  A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.

You'll be done at 6:00!!  That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch.  Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!

Get Your Girlfriends Together

It's fun to get friends together.  Treat your friends to Yoga and Tea rather than Food and Booze.  Inviting friends to come together for a Gentle or Restorative Yoga class is a perfect way to enjoy each other's company and do something good for yourselves.  Many yoga parties end with tea or champagne and some munchies.  Your friends will thank you!

Please call on me if I can help you book a private yoga class or answer any questions.  I can be reached at cheryl@cherylthomas.com.
