Math Counts

"Knock knock."
"Who's there?"
"Matthew."
"Matthew who?"
"Math you can do - because you're great at it!"

That was the joke 9-year-old Cooper Jackson told his fourth grade challengers after winning the annual Math Counts championship on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Poplar Bluff Public Library.

Cooper of Oak Grove won by answering 54 multiplication questions correctly in two minutes. His opponents-Keona Sample of Lake Road, Emily Elliott of Eugene Field and Molly Mooney of O'Neal-were not too far behind, according to facilitators.

In order to advance to the competition, the students each competed in qualifying rounds at their respective elementary schools over the course of three weeks, making them all winners.

Cooper put an end to Eugene Field's two-year winning streak, bringing the friendly title back to Oak Grove, which last brought home the victory in 2012. The boy was awarded $25 and a trophy.

Math Counts is an arithmetic competition sponsored by the Butler County Community Resource Council's Children & Youth Succeeding in School Committee.

VA donates unneeded wheelchairs to district

The John J. Pershing VA Medical Center donated the R-I district two new wheelchairs, which will come in handy during emergency situations, school nursing staff said last week.

A VA spokesperson said Poplar Bluff has a strong support network, and the hospital considers it an honor to give back when it can.

"The John J. Pershing VA Medical Center takes pride in being a part of the Poplar Bluff community - one that has always been highly supportive of area veterans," stated Angela Smith, medical center public affairs officer. "Therefore, when we received these donated wheelchairs that we could not utilize at our facility we were thankful to be able to offer them to the Poplar Bluff school system so that local children could benefit from their use."

The district currently keeps one wheelchair at each of its school facilities, but that is not always enough in cases of injury or sickness, according to R-I Health Coordinator Sheryl Talkington.

Box Tops for Education

On Wednesday, Nov. 4, Holy Cross Episcopal Church donated hundreds of Box Tops to Eugene Field to be exchanged for cash toward the elementary school's activities fund.

The collection served to fulfill the church's community mission, according to Holy Cross leaders. The Box Tops came from church members over the course of a couple months.

Eugene Field has earned thousands of dollars from General Mills' Box Tops for Education program over the past several years, according to coordinator Donna Glass, a third grade teacher. The money has been used to fund student field trips and purchase equipment such as a school camera and scanner.
