Transportation Day yields community support

"Best day ever" was how multiple students described the third annual Transportation Day on Friday, Oct. 30, at the Kindergarten Center, as they toured over a dozen means of transportation, including a hot air balloon for the first time in the history of the event.

The transportation modes-separated into the categories government, service, utility and recreational-included a helicopter, bucket truck, military convoy and jeep, limo and party bus, snow plow, logging truck, motorcycles, horse, 18-wheeler, dump truck, tow truck, ambulance, fire truck, antique and classic cars, VA transit and medical supply truck, as well as a sheriff, police and patrol car.

The Fun Friday activity was organized by reading teacher Pennie Ethridge in celebration of learning the letters I and T, which in this instance stood for: interesting transportation.

Special thanks goes to Gamblin Lumber, Highly Cool, Rushing Towing, Ideal Medical Supply, Air Evac, Ozark Border, John J. Pershing VA Medical Center, MoDOT, National Guard, Christian Motorcyclists Association, Butler County Ambulance, Poplar Bluff Fire Department, Butler County Sheriff, Poplar Bluff Police and the Highway Patrol.

Individuals who helped make the event a success were: Mac Campbell, Collin Dortch, Lucas Dean, Greg Hill, Josh Miller, Stacy Pullum, Kaye Lee, Jonathan Braxton, Barbie Johnson, Steve Reese, Mindy and Brandon Hoffman, Betsy Painton, Rick Sanders, and drug dog Sato.

MoDOT bridge building competition

The Poplar Bluff High School AP physics class is competing regionally in a MoDOT-sponsored model bridge building contest for a potential $10,000 civil engineering scholarship to a heartland university.

Students were supplied 15 pieces of balsa wood, a bottle of glue and some string, then given four weeks to create a bridge design of their choosing between 16-20 inches long and 2-9 inches wide, with the ability to hold at least 7 pounds. The resulting projects will be judged based on structural efficiency on Thursday, Nov. 19, in Cape Girardeau.

The annual competition, intended for juniors and seniors in the Missouri Department of Transportation's Southeast District, was established 12 years ago. This marks the second year Kathy Miller's physics class has participated in the contest, though PBHS' involvement goes back even further.

Mr. and Ms. October

The Poplar Bluff Mules Booster Club has named high school softball player Shelby Sievers and football player Steven Haley the October Athletes of the Month.

Haley, a senior, is only seven tackles short of the school record with 131. His stats include 21 tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles and two interceptions. In the classroom, Haley maintains a 11.100 GPA, and scored a 31 on his ACTs.

"He's a great person and player," said Mules Football coach Mark Barousse, "the kind of teammate you want to have."

Sophomore Sievers holds the record for hits in a single season with 50, runs batted in with 34, and extra base hits with 21. Her batting average is .543 and her pitching record is 12-3. Academically, Sievers is ranked 20th in her class with a 10.643 GPA.

"She excels in all areas of the game of softball and also sets a great example off the field," Sievers' coach Lisa Boyer stated.

Bonus: A final look at Halloween

More than $100 was raised for Lori Garner last week in the Technical Career Center's annual pumpkin-decorating contest during which students in the various programs carve pumpkins to represent their desired trade.

According to an informal Facebook poll, the afternoon section of culinary arts came in first with 43 'likes' with a cheeseburger design and the computer graphics morning class was a close second with 38 'likes' for their E.T.-inspired pumpkin, as of presstime.
