Little Red Bookshelf project launches

Oak Grove Elementary is initiating a community program to put more books in the hands of children for free.

The Bright Futures Site Council of the elementary school has launched the Little Red Bookshelf project with an ambitious goal of collecting 4,500 new or gently used children's books by the end of the calendar year.

The books, intended for students up to grade six, will be available on designated bookshelves at five distribution sites from Jan. 4-May 8. The business locations are to be determined. The Technical Career Center has agreed to supply the special shelving.

"It's like Dr. Seuss says, 'The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go,'" said Jenifer Richardson, Oak Grove principal.

Case in point, expounded Richardson, students recently read a story about classic cars in class, and then later saw TCC auto repair instructor Steven Ray driving through the parent pick-up line in an older vehicle and were able to identify the model.

Collection sites for book donations currently include Oak Grove Elementary, Poplar Bluff Realty, Dr. Mike Price's Family Dentistry office and Whitworth's Gift Chest Jewelers.

"Our goal is to be able to reach children, especially struggling readers, who may not have books at home for their enjoyment," Richardson stated. "By putting a book in their hands, conversations increase between the parent and child regarding the different components of the literary work."

The Family Reading Partnership in Ithaca, N.Y, originated the Little Red Bookshelf concept in 1997. For more information about getting involved, contact Oak Grove at 573-785-6589.

Pink Out Poplar Bluff raises $20K for UCAN

The Poplar Bluff High School Student Council donated a $20,000 check to the United Cancer Assistance Network on Friday, Sept. 25, before a pinked out audience at Fred M. Morrow Stadium.

Since StuCo founded Pink Out Poplar Bluff during the 2011/12 school year, nearly $80,000 has been raised from T-shirt sales for UCAN, a nonprofit that provides financial assistance to area cancer patients seeking treatment.

The annual district-wide fundraiser has evolved into a community-wide event, reinforced with the issuance of a proclamation by Mayor Betty Absheer prior to the Mules Football game this past weekend.

September Athletes of the Month named

The Poplar Bluff Mules Booster Club selected Girls Tennis star Stephanie Hobbs and starting Football quarterback Tristen Francisco as Athletes of the Month for September.

A four-year letterman, Francisco has a career record of 79 completions and 1,489 yards with 137 attempts. The Poplar Bluff High School senior has 50 rushes for 273 yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions. In addition, he has thrown 19 touchdowns. According to head coach Mark Barousse, Francisco has a high IQ on the football field, with a 10.0 grade point average to boot.

Hobbs, also a senior, has a 10-5 record in singles and 5-10 in doubles for the current season, while maintaining a 10.738 GPA in the classroom. According to her coach, Charles Harper, Hobbs is a role model to new and younger teammates, with a character that is above reproach.

"In a sport with no officials, she always makes honest calls, even if it means losing," Harper said. "(Hobbs is) kind and polite in her interactions, even in adverse circumstances."
