The Poplar Bluff Fire Department extended its annual fire safety training last week beyond the culinary arts class to all interested programs at the Technical Career Center.
Students learned about the different types of fire extinguishers before attempting to put out a simulated fire. Afterward the students had a chance to feel the force of a large diameter hose, try on some firefighter gear and tour Engine 7.
"It was a teacher-led initiative," explained Charles Kinsey, Technical Career Center director. "Pretty good work in my book."
Building trades instructor Jody Cochran observed the fire drills taking place at the Mules Café and decided all students can benefit from such training. Fire officials agreed, saying part of their job is outreach in hopes of preventing destructive fires down the line.
In addition to the building trades class and culinary arts the week prior, the auto collision, auto technology, graphic design, health occupations, HVACR and welding programs also participated.
