PBHS engages in GOP governor race forum

A Poplar Bluff High School student and teacher played key roles at the Missouri Republican governor candidate forum attended by a reported 300 guests on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Aad Grotto.

American government instructor Mitch Davis moderated the event and senior Stephanie Hobbs, the president of the Teenage Republicans, served as timekeeper. Participating candidates included past Missouri Department of Agriculture Deputy Director Randy Asbury, businessman John Brunner, Sen. Bob Dixon, former House Speaker Catherine Hanaway and Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder.

"As a government teacher, I implore my students to always find a way to get involved in the political process," Davis stated. "Whenever I was given the opportunity to moderate Saturday's forum, I wanted to set a good example and show them you don't have to be a politician to have a role in the process."

Young Democrats Club president Jackson Rideout, treasurer Christian Cmehil-Warn and member Isaac Laseter, all PBHS seniors, were also in attendance, along with social studies teacher Mike Sowatzke and Assistant Principal Sheldon Tyler.

"I am very proud of them for spending their Saturday evening learning about the platforms of these candidates and their visions for Missouri," Davis continued. "I think the community, state and nation are in great hands because of students like Stephanie, Jackson, Isaac and Christian."

The Butler County Republican Central Committee organized the gubernatorial forum in Poplar Bluff, the first in the state. A new governor will be elected next year, when incumbent Gov. Jay Nixon terms out. So far Attorney General Chris Koster is the sole Democrat to throw his hat in the race.

First Responders Appreciation Day

About 25 city and county first responders shared lunch with Middle School students on Friday in remembrance of Sept. 11.

There was representation from the Butler County Sheriff's Department, Fire Department, Emergency Management Agency and EMS, along with the Poplar Bluff Police Department and Fire Department, plus Rural/Metro. Guests received 'thank you' cards from students.

Lunch was provided by Chartwells School Dining Services. "It's been 25 years since I had a school lunch," Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs joked.

Muffins for Moms

An annual tribute to mothers, moms were treated to muffins on Friday, Sept. 11, when they visited their children at the Kindergarten Center. The occasion-a celebration of the letters M and A-marked the first Fun Friday activity of the school year, coordinated by teacher Pennie Ethridge.

Special thanks to all the volunteers who filled in for mothers unable to participate, and to Bright Futures for making the necessary arrangements.

Mules Café set to reopen with new chef

The Mules Café is set to return under new leadership-but with the same popular menu-from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, in the Administrative Building at 1110 N. Westwood Blvd.

Technical Career Center culinary arts instructor Stephanie Letassy, a Poplar Bluff native, noted any menu variances this year would be subtle since her predecessor Aaron Hudlow established such a regular clientele during his tenure.

"I would like to transfer as much as I can from my brain into the students' brains," said Chef Letassy, who has 30 years experience in the food service industry, most recently at The Wine Rack. "Exposure is everything."

The initial menu will feature a customer favorite: fried catfish, Ms. Dixie's baked beans, Amish coleslaw, jalapeńo cheddar corn bread, a Rice Krispies treat and a soft drink, all for $7. Following the grand reopening, the student-run restaurant will serve lunch to the public on Tuesdays and Fridays. Limited catering services are also available upon request.
