R-I officials invited to present to MSBA

 


 

About 150 Missouri school officials attended a workshop about Poplar Bluff Schools' successful tax levy during the Missouri School Boards' Association's annual conference on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Osage Beach.

 

R-I Superintendent Chris Hon [above] discussed community engagement, Communications/Marketing Coordinator Tim Krakowiak [below] talked about communication tactics and PBHS American government instructor Mitch Davis went over the campaign strategy of the Committee for Our Kids' Future. The referendum marked the first new levy measure that the district passed in over 30 years.

 

School board members Alana Robertson, Dr. Rob Rowland, John Scott and Gary Simmons participated in the conference, attending various breakout sessions centering around topical issues public educators are facing.

 

 

Legislative Branch: A day in the life

 


 

Missouri elected and appointed officials discussed the inner-workings of the legislative branch both via FaceTime and in person during Mitch Davis' American government class on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Poplar Bluff High School.

 

Dignitaries included former Senate Chief of Staff Kit Crancer; state Sen. Doug Libla [above]; chief of staff to president pro tem Sen. Tom Dempsey, Todd Scott [below]; Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder; director of legislation for the Missouri Department of Health and former Senate legislative director, Ellie Glenn; and former president pro tem and current lobbyist for Stinson Leonard Street, Mike Gibbons.

Teenage Republicans attend Reagan Days

 


 

Members of the Poplar Bluff High School Teenage Republicans Club (TARS) attended the Butler County Republican Central Committee's annual Reagan Days on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Aad Grotto.

 

Among other topics, national, state and local GOP leaders discussed the dangers of overreaching government, maintaining conservative values in Butler County and the importance of voting, reported TARS member Ben Soeter, a PBHS senior.

 

During the 'Bringing Back Old Glory'-themed event, students had the chance to visit with U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, U.S. Rep. Jason Smith, Mo. Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, state Sen. Doug Libla, state Reps. Steve Cookson and Todd Richardson, and Butler County Collector candidate Emily Parks.

PBTCC students learn fire safety 101

 


 

The Poplar Bluff Fire Department recently visited the culinary arts class at the Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center to teach fire safety in the event of an emergency in the kitchen.

ECH Picture Day

Football Homecoming

This year's Spirit Week continues through Friday, Oct. 3, when the Mules will vie against Maplewood-Richmond Heights beginning at 7 p.m. at Fred M. Morrow Stadium. Gates open at 5:30, with the celebration of the Homecoming Court at 6:30. The first 250 Mules fans through the gates will receive a free old school pennant, courtesy of our friends at First Midwest Bank.

 

Veteran's Wall Fundraiser

R-I employees are selling raffle tickets for a 2003 Mercedes Benz Kompressor Convertible to raise money to help pay off the Butler County Veteran's Memorial Wall at the Black River Coliseum. Tickets cost $5 apiece, or are five for $20. The car will be given away Saturday, Oct. 4, during the Iron Horse Festival in downtown Poplar Bluff. Pink Out Day

T-Shirts are currently available for Pink-Out Day, which will be held Friday, Oct. 17, during the Mules Football game against Normandy. In addition to serving as a fundraiser for the United Cancer Assistance Network, this year's proceeds will go to Dig for Life, a program through which free mammograms are provided at the Black River Medical Center. T-shirts for UCAN can be purchased for $15 from the PBHS and PBJHS Student Councils through Wednesday, Oct. 8, and T-shirts for Dig for Life can be purchased from the PBJHS Cheerleaders until 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3.

 

Letter Jackets

A Skeeter Kell Sporting Goods representative will be in the lobby of E.T. Peters Gym during advisory from 10:24-11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, to take orders for letter jackets. If parents wish to come early to place an order, the rep will arrive at 10 and stay as late as needed.

 

Cosmetology Program

The PBTCC School of Cosmetology is accepting applications until Saturday, Nov. 1. Click here for an online application.

On Tuesday, Sept. 23, the DAR recognized our 5/6 Students of the Month.

 

On Wednesday, Sept. 24, the DAR recognized the Rotary Club for making a generous software donation to StuCo.

 

The DAR also reported about the PBHS Trap Team's new coach, Bill McKinley.

 

The SEMO Times ran a release about MOREnet's SEMO Fiber Project that Poplar Bluff Schools is participating in.

 

The SEMO Times also ran a release about the Academic Assistance Group.

 

On Friday, Sept. 26, the DAR recognized Lake Road's Students of the Month.
