Caleb, first responders get heroes' welcome

Poplar Bluff High School sophomore Caleb Morrow and his first responders received a standing ovation from the crowd during the Mules Football opener of the varsity season on Friday, Aug. 22, at Fred M. Morrow Stadium.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please give Caleb, his mother Tamara Lewis and father Mike Morrow, and these fine Samaritans a big welcoming round of applause," announced Jim Carrier over the PA system.

Caleb was able to return to school last week after the 15-year-old collapsed at the start of football practice on Aug. 4, due to a previously undetected heart condition known as Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

Mules Athletic Trainer Heath Willis rushed to Caleb's aid, performing CPR with the help of assistant football coach, Jay Dowd. Head coach Mark Barousse phoned 9-1-1 and EMTs arrived on the scene within a few minutes. Caleb was airlifted to Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center in St. Louis, where he was successfully treated and released several days later.

RiverMist Pencil Drive

Residents and staff from RiverMist Assisted Living by Americare delivered a donation of more than 1,500 pencils to Poplar Bluff Schools on Thursday, Aug. 14, in the Administrative Building.

The pencil drive was held at the facility during the first two week of the month, and was intended to benefit students in need at the start of the new school. One of RiverMist's philosophies is to "be a good community neighbor," explained Kim Wilson, RiverMist administrator.

Student recognized for Breaking Traditions

Recent Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center graduate of the practical nursing program, Roger Ray, has been selected as a post-secondary male regional award winner of the Missouri Breaking Traditions contest.

Ray is eligible for a $100 scholarship from the Foundation of Missouri Women and a $1,000 scholarship from Linn State Technical College. Presently, he has accepted a position at Kneibert Clinic Urgent Care, where he plans to work for a while before becoming a registered nurse.

"I'm a non-traditional student in three different ways: my gender, my age and my limited education experience after high school," wrote Ray on the nomination form, which was submitted by his nursing instructor, Ruth Hutcheson. "If you know of something you want to do - do it! It doesn't matter if it is a 'male' or 'female career' - do what you want to do with your work."

BONUS: Bosses vs. Leaders

Seventh grader Hannah Tutor of Poplar Bluff Junior High School doodled her depiction of true leadership on Wednesday, Aug. 20, in Anita Frey's teen leadership elective, a product of the Captioning Kids' Hearts professional development program.

Frey explained that her class was performing role-play exercises of good versus poor leadership, when Hannah submitted the drawing on her own initiative at the end of the hour. "I was super impressed," Frey commented.
