Student honored for Breaking Traditions
Ruth Morris-Fouts, a nontraditional student in the Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center welding program, has been selected as a post-secondary female Missouri Breaking Traditions regional award winner.
Morris-Fouts is eligible to receive a $100 scholarship from the Foundation of Missouri Women and a $1,000 scholarship from Linn State Technical College. However, she plans to obtain her plate certification in Kansas City from the Welders Union immediately following graduation so she can relocate to Indiana and take a job with her husband, also a welder. After saving up money for a year, Morris-Fouts intends on returning to school to pursue additional welding training, according to Region VII College and Career Consultant Becki Shrum.
Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Regional College and Career Consultants, the Breaking Traditions contest has for the past 21 years honored outstanding students who have based their career choices on their interests and abilities, rather than their gender. Nontraditional is defined as occupations in which individuals from one gender comprise less than 25 percent of the individuals employed in that field.
