Mules Café slated to reopen Tuesday

The Mules Café will open to the public for the school year from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, in the Administrative Building, and every Tuesday and Friday thereafter.

The menu will include fried catfish, Ms. Dixie's baked beans, Amish coleslaw, jalapeńo cheddar corn bread and peanut butter pie, plus a soft drink.

While the Mules Café continually strives to keep costs down, with the price having remained unchanged since 2008, a meal has increased a dollar to $7 due to inflation.

"We feel for the servings you receive and the quality of food that we are still the best deal in town when it comes to lunch," said Charles Kinsey, Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center director.

The Mules Café is operated by TCC students in the culinary arts program under the instruction of Chef Aaron Hudlow.

Ask the staff about making a reservation for catering services, which is available at $10 per three-course meal for minimal groups of 12 on Thursdays in the Administrative Building.

Jr. and Sr. High integrate digital techbooks

Poplar Bluff Schools and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content for K-12 classrooms, announced today an expansion of their partnership that brings Discovery Education's award-winning digital social studies and science textbooks to junior and high school classrooms district wide. Discovery Education will support the school system's digital transformation, which is rapidly evolving in partnership with Mooresville Graded School District and helping to prepare students for success in the 21st century.

"We are thrilled to expand our collaboration with Discovery Education to provide our educators with resources that are relevant to the 21st century learner, as well as critical to preparing students to be competitive in the global economy and meeting students' instructional needs," said Patty Robertson, R-I assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction. "Our partnerships with national leaders like Discovery Education and Mooresville Graded School District support us as we strive to educate all students to their full potential, and inspire them to be lifelong learners who possess the skills and knowledge necessary to be productive members in our changing world."

Over the past two years, the R-I school district has worked closely with Mooresville Graded School District in North Carolina, which is nationally recognized for the success of its digital transformation and long-time partnership with Discovery Education, in order to ensure their conversion to digital learning environments continues to positively impact student outcomes and engagement. The school district has hosted teachers from MGSD for numerous professional development days throughout the year, including the "Mooresville Institute" over the summer, which focused on the effective integration of digital technology into instruction.

Parents as Teachers accepting enrollment

The Poplar Bluff Early Childhood Center is presently accepting enrollment in Parents as Teachers, a voluntary and free family education and support program for prenatal children up until kindergarten age.

PAT enrollees are supported by credentialed parent educators who suggest ways to effectively teach and nurture children through personal visits, group meetings, screenings and connections with community resources.

Through the program, parents will acquire skills to make the most of the crucial early learning years, according to literature provided by the national center headquartered in St. Louis. PAT covers child development; suggests activities encouraging language development, intellectual growth, social and motor skills, and strengthens parents' relationships with their children.

There are no income guidelines or restrictions for families to participate. For additional information, call 573-785-6477 or 573-785-6803.
