Congrats to our 2013 Teachers of the Year

 

One of the most admirable designations in our district, teachers of the year were nominated from each of our schools, then one teacher from each grade level was selected by a committee, and finally a district-wide teacher was named on Tuesday, April 9, during our annual luncheon in the Missouri Room. Congratulations to all!

 

              

Instructor Susie Rahlmann [right] was named the District Teacher of the Year, Elementary Grade Span TOY and Kindergarten Center TOY by Principal Carol Metz.

 

Rahlmann has been teaching kindergarten for 14 years: two years in Greenville, then she was hired at the Poplar Bluff Kindergarten Center the first year it opened.

 

 

Speech instructor Donna Baller [right] was named Middle School Grade Span Teacher of the Year and 5th & 6th Grade Center TOY by Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum/Instruction Patty Robertson, who was filling in for Principal Mike Owen.

 

Baller took her first post as speech/language pathologist in 1996. She began with the Poplar Bluff School District in 2009.

 

 

Communication arts instructor Kay Campbell was named Secondary Grade Span Teacher of the Year and Senior High TOY by Principal Mike Kiehne.

 

Campbell has been teaching communication arts for the past five years at PBHS. Her first year in education was at Perry County District 32, teaching eighth grade language arts and reading; she spent four years at Greenville High School, teaching language arts to freshmen and sophomores; and she spent 20 years at Lone Oak High School in Paducah, teaching language arts and journalism to seniors.

 

 

Science instructor Vic Clark [left] was named Junior High Teacher of the Year by Principal Bob Case.

 

Clark has served as a science teacher at PBJHS for the past eight years, as well as assistant football and track coach. He has a total of 42 years of teaching, coaching and athletic administration experience, having been employed at various colleges and schools in Indiana and Kentucky.

 


Health occupations instructor Carmen Hoggard [left] was named Technical Career Center Teacher of the Year by Director Jean Winston.

 

Hoggard began as a health occupation instructor in 1998. She worked as a nursing assistant for seven years prior, then as a registered nurse for 12 years.

 



Physical education instructor Chris Smith was named Early Childhood Center Teacher of the Year by Principal JoAnne Westbrook.

 

Smith began at the Early childhood Center in 2010, also serving as assistant varsity football coach and head ninth grade coach at PBHS. Additionally, he coached baseball here. His coaching career began at East Prairie High School in 2009.

 

 

Third grade instructor Juli Schalk [left] was named Eugene Field Elementary Teacher of the Year by Principal Jennifer Taylor.

 

Schalk has worked for the last six years as a third grade teacher at Eugene Field.

 


Fourth grade instructor Jennifer Goins [right] was named Lake Road Elementary Teacher of the Year by Principal Erica Weadon.

 

Goins is in her second year at Lake Road. She taught at Oak Grove Elementary for four years prior.

 


Fourth grade instructor Joy Burke [left] was named Oak Grove Elementary Teacher of the Year by Principal Jenifer Richardson.

 

Burke has been employed by Poplar Bluff Schools for 23 years, having taught third grade for 16 years, fourth grade for five, sixth grade for one and adult basic education for 10 years simultaneously. Her first year of teaching was at Neelyville in 1988. She started at Oak Grove in 2001.

 

 

Categorical consultant Wray Ann Williams was named O'Neal Elementary Teacher of the Year by Principal Lorenzo Sandlin.

 

Williams has served as program coordinator of the intensive needs program at O'Neal for the past five years. She started her career with Poplar Bluff Schools as a paraprofessional at the Early Childhood Center in 1993.

Poplar Bluff R-I accredited with distinction

 

       

The Poplar Bluff R-I School District was recognized by the Missouri Association of School Administrators for being accredited with distinction in performance for improved achievement through the Missouri School Improvement Program on Thursday, April 11, during the 53rd Annual Recognition Banquet at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau.

Bulger accepted to MO Scholars Academy

 
  

Among 330 students in the state, Poplar Bluff High School sophomore Madison Bulger [left] has been accepted into the Missouri Scholars Academy, which will be held June 9-29 at the University of Missouri in Columbia.

 

PBHS Guidance Counselor Tamara Day [right], who said she typically only has one student per year be accepted into the prestigious academy, assisted Bulger in the rigorous application process.

 

Bulger is a member of the Beta Club, the Chemistry Club, Student Council and an athlete on the Swim Team.

Spaghetti Day

The Rotary Club is holding its annual Spaghetti Day from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in the First Baptist Church fellowship hall across from Junior High. A delivery option is also available. Tickets are only $6 for either lunch or dinner, and can be purchased by emailing Becky Winters, or text messaging 573-714-4414. Proceeds benefit the "Good Habits" program al Lake Road Elementary School.

 

Special Olympics

The annual Southeast Area Special Olympics will take place from 9 a.m.-noon Friday, April 19, at Poplar Bluff Junior High.

 

Golf Tournament

The Poplar Bluff Public School Foundation is sponsoring its 14th annual four-person scramble golf classic at 1 p.m. Friday, May 3, at Ozark Ridge Golf Course. Lunch will be provided at noon.

  

Participants and hole sponsors are currently being sought for this fun and worthwhile event. The tournament will be limited to the first 20 teams to enter. All proceeds go toward the Foundation scholarship fund and other educational opportunities offered through the nonprofit organization. Donations are tax deductible.

Class of 2013

The Poplar Bluff High School graduation is slated to take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 9, in the Black River Coliseum.

The premiere edition of our district magazine hits newsstands May 10. For businesses interested in ad space, please contact the Daily American Republic at 573-785-1414 by Wednesday, April 17.

 

Early Childhood Screening

The Early Childhood Center is currently accepting screening appointments for May 10-14. To attend pre-school during the 2013/14 school year, children must be between 3-4 years old before July 31, 2013 and live within the R-I School District. Appointments may be made by calling 573-785-6803. Please have child's social security number ready.

The Missouri State Teachers Association "School & Community" magazine published a great article (pages 28-29) written by PBJHS teacher Jenn Nicolini about UCAN fundraising.

 

On Monday, April 8, the DAR published a photo from a St. Jude fundraiser that involved students throwing pies at their assistant principal.

 

On Tuesday, April 9, Kait8 reported about the Beta Club's Donut Days on its website.

 

KFVS12 ran a photo from the chamber's First Friday Coffee, when students showed the business community what The Leader in Me is all about.

 

On Wednesday, April 10, the DAR's excellent Teacher of the Year series began with an article about Susie Rahlmann of the Kindergarten Center.

 

On Thursday, April 11, the DAR reported about Teacher of the Year Carmen Hoggard of the TCC.

 

The ShowMe Times in Dexter ran a release about our top Math-A-Thon fundraising students and their chaperones visiting St. Jude (must search under the 'schools' tab).

 

On Friday, April 12, the DAR wrote about Teacher of the Year Chris Smith of the Early Childhood Center.

 

On Sunday, April 14, the DAR spotlighted Teacher of the Year Wray Ann Williams of O'Neal Elementary.

 

On Monday, April 15, DAR Reporter Donna Farley wrote an article about Teacher of the Year Kay Campbell of PBHS.
