FALL BACK! Turn your clock back one hour starting at 2am on Sunday, November 2nd

Dear Neighbor,

Last Sunday, I joined Gov. Pat Quinn, Senate President John Cullerton, Congressman Mike Quigley, Rep. Ann Williams, Audubon Principal Ken Fitzner, teachers, parents, and Audubon students to celebrate a $750k State of Illinois grant to complete Phase 2 of the Audubon Field of Dreams project! The grant is a major component of a $1.3 million project to convert the existing asphalt lot at Audubon into a year round play-space featuring a new playground and turf field. The grant will also fund stormwater management features underneath the turf field to reduce localized flooding. For over three years, we've worked with our state legislators and the Audubon community to identify funding, cobble together dollars, and advocate for an Audubon campus the entire community could enjoy. Phase 1 of the project was funded with aldermanic menu dollars, a grant secured by #GROW47, and the funds secured by the Friends of Audubon. And with last week's announcement, the entire Audubon community will soon enjoy their Field of Dreams!

Senator Durbin Breakfast

On Monday, I had breakfast with Senator Dick Durbin and Rep. Greg Harris at Marmalade, 1969 W. Montrose. We discussed the link between strong neighborhood schools and strong communities along with other issues impacting the city and state. After breakfast, we visited the firehouse at Damen and Grace where we discussed the issues a variety of issues with firefighters and emergency personnel. I have been a long-time fan of Senator Durbin and his statesman-like approach to governing and legislating so it was great to spend some time discussing the issues with him.

Senator Durbin's last visit to our community was in August where he accompanied me to a few block parties and Shakespeare in the Park.

GROW47 Breakfast with Principals in 47th Ward

On Tuesday morning, I convened a breakfast with every school principal in the 47th Ward (public & private schools). The goal of the breakfast: to promote Lake View High School and Amundsen High School as options for families and students in our community. If you live in Tier 3 or 4 of the CPS Tier system (which you do), your child has to get straight A's and test in the 95-99% percentile to be admitted into a selective enrollment high school -- basically, your child has to be perfect. The stress associated with being 'perfect' is taking a toll on our community. At breakfast we discussed the stress on kids and families and as a result, we are banding together to promote our neighborhood high schools and build a neighborhood K-12 system in our community. As I have said many times before, the completion of a neighborhood K-12 system is my 'all-in' for the next four years. And with their help, I believe we are taking a major step forward towards realizing this goal.

With your partnership, we've advanced a major capital improvement project at every neighborhood elementary school in the 47th Ward. And we did it in less than four years. So why can't we complete the K-12 vision in the next four? Together we can. Just get involved.

Take the first step and join me on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at Lake View High School's Open House (4015 N. Ashland) from 10am to 2pm. Come and meet Lake View's transformative new principal, Scott Grens. Meet the great teachers and current students. Come and meet your neighbors! Hope to see you tomorrow.

O'Hare Runaways and Noise Pollution

And finally, at today's budget hearings, I questioned the Chicago Department Aviation on plans to reduce aircraft noise and noise pollution associated with the new runways built as part of the O'Hare Modernization Program. The new runways were voted on by City Council in 2001. Since their completion, our community has experienced a major increase in noise pollution. Over the summer, I sent a letter supporting Congressman Mike Quigley's efforts to mitigate jet noise, and at today's hearings I made clear to the department that the current level of noise pollution is untenable. I am going to continue working with my colleagues in City Council and Congressman Quigley to address the noise pollution over the 47th Ward. Click here to read coverage from today's hearing.

Happy Halloween!

Tonight, ghouls, princesses, robots, and all kinds of other creatures will descend upon the 47th Ward. Trick-or-treating will run until after sundown. Be careful when driving through the neighborhood, and also be aware that several blocks are having block parties to celebrate.  Have a safe and happy Halloween!

Sincerely,
Ameya

2014-2015 Block Audits Due November 25th

Each year, every ward is allocated $1.32 million in aldermanic menu funds to pay for infrastructure improvements. The 47th Ward's aldermanic menu dollars have been spent for this year, and a full report on last year's process and results is available on our website.  It's now time to begin the process for the 2015 Aldermanic Menu Program.

We give everyone the opportunity to complete an audit of their block. This audit is the first step in our menu process, and provides our office with information on which improvements are needed in particular areas. The block audit for 2014-15 is now online and you can participate by clicking here.  If you, or someone you know, would like to complete this on paper they can pick up a copy from the 47th Ward Office at 4243 N Lincoln Avenue.  We will be accepting completed audits until midnight on November 25, 2014.

The 47th Ward Team will then score the audits in December and January, and we will hold our annual vote for menu spending in February or March of 2015.  We expect the menu submission for 2015 to be ready for submission to the City by April.

If you have any questions about completing a block audit or our menu process, please contact the 47th Ward Office at 773-868-4747 or info@chicago47.org.

Halloween Safety

Safety is most important for our little ghosts and goblins! Please be aware of Block Party street closures this weekend and next weekend. Our neighborhood will have almost two dozen Halloween Block Parties on Friday, October 31. Those streets will be closed from 3pm-8pm.

While the blocks are closed to vehicle traffic, all trick or treaters are welcome!

Halloween Advice for Your Pets

1. Trick-or-treat candies are not for pets. All forms of chocolate -- especially baking or dark chocolate -- can be dangerous, even lethal, for dogs and cats

2. Don't leave pets out in the yard on Halloween. Surprisingly, vicious pranksters have been known to tease, injure, steal, and even kill pets on Halloween night.

3. Keep pets confined and away from the door. Not only will your door be constantly opening and closing on Halloween, but strangers will be dressed in unusual costumes and yelling loudly for their candy. This, of course, is scary for our furry friends.

4. Keep Halloween plants such as pumpkins and corn out of reach. Although they are relatively nontoxic, such plants can induce gastrointestinal upset should your pets ingest them in large quantities. Intestinal blockage can even occur if large pieces are swallowed.

5. Pet Costumes. Make pet costumes comfortable and supervise your pet while in costume

Riverbank Neighbors sends out a thank you to Mark C. for the donation of bricks and limestone for our work on the west bank of the river. The bricks were from a planter his grandfather built and the limestone from a family quarry in Indiana. They'll be put to good use and won't be in a landfill.

Our trees need attention before the harsh Winter weather sets in

Put a hose on a slow drip overnight to get a good soaking to the roots

Prune only after your tree has entered dormancy after the risk of new growth

Apply a fertilizer that promotes root growth over leaf growth

Mulch around the base of the tree to moderate heat loss and to keep in moisture

Leave space between the tree and mulch to discourage mice.

Check out the infrastructure map on our website.

Lawrence Avenue Streetscape

  • Street paving on Lawrence between Ravenswood and Clark is scheduled to be completed on Saturday (Nov. 1).  This stretch will be striped in early November.  Additionally, the new crosswalks will be installed (in early- to mid-November) after the street has been resurfaced, which will take approximately a week as long as the weather cooperates. The stretch between Western and Ravenswood has been completed and thermoplastic striping and stamped asphalt crosswalk markings have been installed along this stretch. As always, pay close attention to parking restrictions.
  • New pedestrian refuge islands (including ADA compliant ramps) have been installed along the entire stretch between Western and Clark. ADA ramps are being installed to line up with the street crossings at the pedestrian islands.
  • Sidewalk and curb/gutter replacement has been finished up along the last stretch, which is on the south side of Lawrence between Ravenswood and Clark.  Sidewalks, ramps, and bus pads have been poured.
  • Bike racks, chairs, trash receptacles, and benches are being installed all along the corridor.
  • Sewer and electrical work continues along the corridor. Most of the new street light poles have been installed and old poles have been removed.  As the remaining poles are removed, these areas will be filled in with brick pavers or concrete.
  • Landscaping work for fall plantings in Claremont Plaza and elsewhere between Western and Damen will continue through early November.  Plantings between Damen and Clark will be performed in the spring and any additional punch list items that are not addressed this fall will be completed in the spring.
