On this day in 1920, the Chicago Bears play 1st NFL game, win 7-0.

Dear Neighbor,

We just capped off another great week for 47th ward neighborhood schools and #GROW47! This morning I had joined the McPherson Elementary community to cut the ribbon on their new playground and learning garden! Today's ribbon cutting is the culmination of almost two years of hard work between CPS, my office, Sen. Steans, Rep. Harris, the McPherson LSC, the Friends of McPherson, Open Lands, Barrett & Porto, Sy Taxman, #GROW47, Kim Silver, Bob Farster, and the entire McPherson community.  Together we cobbled nearly $1 million in funding from TIF, aldermanic menu, state capital funds, and private donations to advance this project. I am so happy that we were able to complete this project.

McPherson School is the starting point for all of the improvements on #ANewLawrence.  In fact, I am getting calls from real estate agents telling me that families are seeking out the McPherson attendance area as they search for homes in our community. This news confirms our vision to build community and tie all economic development to neighborhood schools.  Simply put, invest in neighborhood schools and everything else follows.

Huge congratulations and thank you to the McPherson Elementary community. You made this happen!

Waters Elementary

This afternoon, I joined Tim Barrett (from Barrett and Porto Real Estate), Terri Versace, Principal Titia Crespo, and Waters teachers and students to unveil their brand new gym floor. The new gym floor was funded by a $100k grant from Barrett and Porto Real Estate/Sy Taxman. The grant was secured by the Friends of Waters and #GROW47. The new gym floor project cost $62k - which leaves almost $40k for another capital improvement project at Waters! I can't wait to see what gets funded next!  Check out the adorable video that Waters' students made to show their appreciation.

Since taking office in 2011, I have made #GROW47 and 47th Ward neighborhood schools my 'all-in.' And in three years, we've invested millions of TIF dollars into 47th Ward schools, allocated hundreds of thousands of aldermanic menu funds for school playground projects, and secured over $400k in private funds for neighborhood schools. I am proud to report that as a result of #GROW47 and the incredible community partnerships, EVERY 47th Ward neighborhood school is moving forward on a major capital improvement project!

Now to complete the #GROW47 vision of building a neighborhood K-12 system, over the next four years, my office is going to work double-time on our neighborhood high schools. But I can't do it alone and I need your buy-in. Check out one of my Facebook posts below from earlier this summer:

Neighborhood schools have been my 'all-in' since taking office - but I still hear some skepticism about neighborhood high schools. But here is what I know: People move to our community for elementary schools, but move to the suburbs for high schools when their children reach the sixth or seventh grade (sometimes much earlier). Why? Families and students are living in a pressure-cooker. If you live in Tier 3 or 4 of the CPS Tier system, your child has to get straight A's and test in the 95-99% percentile to test into a selective enrollment high school -- basically, your child has to be perfect. For many families, the stress is just too much and they move to the suburbs. What do they get in the suburbs? Suburbs make schools the starting point for everything they do. Property values, economic development, and community sustainability is tied to the school districts. So one tax bill nets a family an entire K-12 system. This means there is no stress about getting into the right high school to get into the right college as everyone goes to the same high school. There is more stability and equity for all kids. And this allows kids to be kids and families to live with some peace.

To combat the suburban outflow, I launched GROW47. The goal: give families in the City what they seek out in the suburbs - a neighborhood K-12 system.

The completion of a neighborhood K-12 system in our community begins with you and me. And it begins with shaping our perception of neighborhood high schools. Everyone has to get involved-parents, homeowners, renters, business owners, etc. It doesn't matter if you have children. You can do your part by running for Local School Council. Or join your school's parent organization. Volunteer at an event or put a sign in your window. At a minimum, spread a positive message about your neighborhood school. How does this help? Because performance always follows perception.

If you and your family are tired of living in a constant state of stress, I urge you to take a second look at Lake View High School and Amundsen High School. Both schools have transformative principals, a vision for excellence, and great programs. What's missing? Buy-in.

Shaping school perception begins with you. And again, performance follows perception. So what can you do? Get involved. Here's how:

  • Join the new Lake View Partners - Join the Friends of Amundsen
  • Work with both principals to set up school tours
  • Begin a dialogue on your block about neighborhood schools - and name the time and place and I will do my best to be there to give your neighbors my pitch on building a neighborhood K-12 system. Email schedule@chicago47.org to make arrangements.

Here's my point: Together, we've advanced a major capital improvement project at every neighborhood elementary school in the 47th Ward. And we did it in less than four years. So why can't we complete the K-12 vision in the next four? Together we can. Just get involved. Join me at the next Lake View High School/Amundsen High School open house! Let's make this happen.

2015 Budget

Earlier this week, Mayor Emanuel delivered his 2015 Budget Address to the City Council. We are reviewing the budget documents now in preparation for the budget hearings that will take place over the next two weeks.  The 47th Ward Office will be hosting town halls to discuss the budget.  We will announce town hall meetings in next week's newsletter. In the meantime, please call or email my office with any feedback.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Ameya

2014-2015 Residential Pick-up/Van Permits Available

If you are the owner of a pickup truck or van, you need a special permit to park on the residential streets in the 47th Ward.

The permits for the 2014-2015 season are now available.  Please bring your registration and city sticker information into our office along with your truck to receive your permit.

Report Graffiti

Be sure to report any graffiti to our office (info@chicago47.org, 773-868-4747), 311, or through the Chicago Works app.  You'll need to know the address, type of surface, and whether or not the tag is more than six feet from the ground.  Graffiti that contains profanity, hate language or is done on a church or school receives special attention.

The faster we remove graffiti the less likely vandals are to target that area again.  Thanks for your help!

Welcome Home: New Art Exhibit at the Ward Office

Alderman Ameya Pawar's vision of highlighting the works of local artists in his office has been realized through the OpenWall Chicago initiative directed by Patricia Larkin Green. Every quarter the OpenWall Chicago committee determines a theme, then displays artwork in this public space. The current exhibit, Welcome Home, features the artwork of veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces who live and work in the 47th Ward. Featured artists are Jasmine Clark, Stuart Hall, Mike Helbing, Jeanine Hill-Soldner, Patrick Kerrigan, Dennis Paterka, Patrick Gale Putze and Piotr Wolodkowicz. The show is curated by Thomas Gianni, Tam Dillman and Bill Moran and runs through November 30.

The public is invited to mingle with the alderman and his staff, the local community and the artists to discuss their works at the opening reception on Sunday, October 19, from 12:30 to 3:00. Kevin Barszcz, founder and marketing director of Chicago Vets, will give a talk at the reception. Chicago Vets is a non-profit organization that helps Chicago-area service members and their families transition back to civilian life. To learn more about the artists and the event, please check out the OpenWall Chicago website at www.openwallchicago.org and leave your comments.

Lincoln Square Friendship Center, 2733 W. Lawrence Avenue

2nd Saturday of the Month - 10am-1pm

November 8

Thanks from neighbors who visited the Repair Café to Jim (first-time Repair Coach!) and Lenore for being super Repair Coaches on Saturday. We had five people come in, and our Coaches were busy the whole time. Jim also mentored neighbor Mike through a lamp fix. He got it all taken apart and diagnosed the problem, and when we didn't have the right part, he sent Mike away with the know-how to fix it himself -- that's what we like to see! After all, one of our mission points is "To preserve traditional repair know-how & skills, and pass them on."

If you would like to be a Repair Coach, please let us know. Handy folks are always needed!

Our Repair Café is part of an international movement, check it out. http://repaircafe.org/

We are neighbors sharing skills, keeping items out of the landfill and building community along the way.

Lincoln Square Friendship Center Pantry. Are you interested in our newest neighborhood pantry? Sign up for their newsletter: lincolnsquarefc@gmail.com. There are many ways for you to help - volunteer, help fundraise, hold a food drive, donate bins, pick-up donations, sponsor/manage a community garden bed. We are neighbors helping neighbors and making a difference. The Lincoln Square Friendship Pantry needs your used plastic grocery-type bags or reusable bags you no longer need. You may drop them off at 2733 W. Lawrence on Thursday afternoons or at the Alderman's office. Thanks for your continued support.

On the 3rd Friday of the month The Lincoln Square Friendship Center is the home to Friendship Pet Food Pantry. Pet food is provided to folks who are having a hard time feeding their beloved pets. The Friendship Pet Food Pantry would like to thank our thoughtful neighbors and these generous businesses for donating pet food for our neighbors in need: Ruff Haus, Urban Pooch, Your Best Friend Pet Supply, Jack & Ginger's, Hello Doggy & Zulu.

Upcoming dates: August 15 and September 19 from 3-5pm

If you know anyone who needs assistance, please pass this along.

Their ever-popular "Game Night" could use a few more board games like Sorry, Chess, Life, Uno, Jenga, Rummy Cube, etc.

Needed! Old towels and blankets, please. The dogs and cats awaiting forever homes at Animal Care & Control need your old towels and blankets.  Please clean out your linen closets and bring the items to the Alderman's office Mon-Fri 9am-5pm. We know they will be greatly appreciated.

47th Ward Infrastructure Update

Check out the infrastructure map on our website.

Lawrence Avenue Streetscape

  • Street paving on Lawrence between Ravenswood and Clark is expected to begin next week.  The street will be milled, paved, and striped over the course of about a week.  Additionally, the new crosswalks will be installed after the street has been resurfaced (in early November), which will take approximately a week as long as the weather cooperates. The stretch between Western and Ravenswood has been completed and thermoplastic striping and stamped asphalt crosswalk markings have been installed along this stretch. As always, pay close attention to parking restrictions.
  • New pedestrian refuge islands (including ADA compliant ramps) have been installed along the entire stretch between Western and Clark. ADA ramps are being installed to line up with the street crossings at the pedestrian islands.
  • Sidewalk and curb/gutter replacement is being finished up along the last stretch, which is on the south side of Lawrence between Ravenswood and Clark.  Ramps, carriage walks, and bus pads will be poured and brick pavers will be installed by the end of October.
  • Bike racks, chairs, trash receptacles, and benches are being installed all along the corridor.
  • Sewer and electrical work continues along the corridor. Most of the new street light poles have been installed and old poles have been removed.
  • Landscaping work for fall plantings in Claremont Plaza and elsewhere between Western and Damen began last week and will continue.  Plantings between Damen and Clark will be performed in the spring.  Additional punch list items that are not addressed this fall will be addressed in the spring.
