On this day in 1901, a 63-year-old schoolteacher named Annie Edson Taylor becomes the first person to take the plunge over Niagara Falls in a barrel.

Dear Neighbor,

The good news keeps rolling in for our neighborhood schools. I am pleased to announce the Friends of Audubon Elementary School were awarded a $750k grant from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to fund Phase 2 of their Field of Dreams campus project! The grant is a major component of a $1.3 million project to convert the existing asphalt lot into a year round play-space featuring a new playground, turf field, and storm-water management features. For over three years, we've worked with our state legislators and the Audubon community to identify funding, cobble together dollars, and advocate for an Audubon campus the entire community could enjoy. Thanks to Gov. Pat Quinn, Sen. President Cullerton, and Rep. Ann Williams, we now have the funding in place to complete the entire project (Phase 1 and 2)!

My office helped fund the playground component (Phase 1) of the project with over $300k in aldermanic menu funds -- #GROW47 secured a $50k grant from Barrett & Porto Real Estate and Sy Taxman. We broke ground on Phase 1 in September of this year. Construction on the new playground is nearly complete.

And now, we can celebrate the funding for Phase 2! Once the project is complete, the Audubon campus will feature a new playground and turf field. The installation of the turf field will also reduce flooding in the area - today storm-water runs off the asphalt lot into the surrounding area and sewer system causing basement flooding or flooding in the surrounding streets. The turf field will include permeable features so water will now flow back into the ground. The new campus will be a 180 degree shift from what exists today. This is great news!

All the credit for securing aldermanic menu funds, the GROW47 grant, and the IEPA grant goes to the amazing group of parents (Friends of Audubon and Local School Council), community members, teachers, and Principal Fitzner. Together, they have spent countless hours writing grants and appeal letters, making phone calls, and advocating for this project. It goes to show how much a community can accomplish when they organize and partner with all levels of government.

Finally, I want to thank Governor Pat Quinn, Senate President John Cullerton, Sen. Heather Steans, Rep. Greg Harris, and Rep. Ann Williams for their partnership and continued leadership on this project and the many schools and parks improvements currently underway in 47th Ward. During my time in office, they've allocated over $12 million in State of Illinois capital funds for projects at Bell School, Clark Park, Ravenswood Elementary School, and now Audubon Elementary School. I am grateful for their partnership and belief in our vision to build a local neighborhood K-12 system in our community. The result: in less than four years, and through our joint efforts, we've advanced major capital projects at EVERY neighborhood school in our community!

To celebrate, join Sen. President John Cullerton, Rep. Ann Williams, Cmsr. John Fritchey, and me at a special grant award ceremony on Saturday, October 25, 2014, at 4:30 p.m. at Audubon Elementary School at 3500 N. Hoyne Avenue. Governor Pat Quinn will be on-hand to award the IEPA grant.

2014-2015 Block Audit

Each year, every ward is allocated $1.32 million in aldermanic menu funds to pay for infrastructure improvements. The 47th Ward's aldermanic menu dollars have been spent for this year, and a full report on last year's process and results is available on our website.  It's now time to begin the process for the 2015 Aldermanic Menu Program.

We give everyone the opportunity to complete an audit of their block. This audit is the first step in our menu process, and provides our office with information on which improvements are needed in particular areas. The block audit for 2014-15 is now online and you can participate by clicking here.  If you, or someone you know, would like to complete this on paper they can pick up a copy from the 47th Ward Office at 4243 N Lincoln Avenue.  We will be accepting completed audits until midnight on November 25, 2014

The 47th Ward Team will then score the audits in December and January, and we will hold our annual vote for menu spending in February or March of 2015.  We expect the menu submission for 2015 to be ready for submission to the City by April.

If you have any questions about completing a block audit or our menu process, please contact my office.

Ashland Avenue Northbound Resurfacing

Crews will mobilize tomorrow morning, Saturday, October 25th, to complete resurfacing on northbound Ashland from Montrose to Lawrence.  A partial lane closure will be necessary during their work, but once this is completed the the northbound side of the Ashland project will be substantially complete.  The only thing left will be street marking, and that is accomplished with little, if any disruption. Thank you for your patience. Crews continue their work in the southbound lanes and expect to have everything completed before winter.

Have a great weekend, and check out all the great neighborhood Halloween events scheduled over the next week, below.

Sincerely,
Ameya

Dara Reports

Thanks to all who contributed to our Autumn Recycling Event we filled a 50 yard-semi

-way to the top, collected two small SVU's worth of books and eight bicycles. The books are donated to www.openbooks.org to create literacy programs and the bikes will be joining a large shipment to Ghana thanks to www.workingbikes.org

. These donated items will benefit hundreds of people. A special thanks to Mr. H our C3 volunteer and IT teacher-extraordinaire. Mr. H brought 8 of his hardworking Von Steuben students to help. Our own summer intern, president of the Whitney Young Senior Class, Kyle also came to lend a hand.

Save anything with a plug, electronics, books and bikes. We'll do it again in April for Earth Day.

Halloween Safety

Safety is most important for our little ghosts and goblins! Please be aware of Block Party street closures this weekend and next weekend. Our neighborhood will have almost two dozen Halloween Block Parties on Friday, October 31. Those streets will be closed from 3pm-8pm.

While the blocks are closed to vehicle traffic, all trick or treaters are welcome!

Halloween Advice for Your Pets

1. Trick-or-treat candies are not for pets. All forms of chocolate -- especially baking or dark chocolate -- can be dangerous, even lethal, for dogs and cats

2. Don't leave pets out in the yard on Halloween. Surprisingly, vicious pranksters have been known to tease, injure, steal, and even kill pets on Halloween night.

3. Keep pets confined and away from the door. Not only will your door be constantly opening and closing on Halloween, but strangers will be dressed in unusual costumes and yelling loudly for their candy. This, of course, is scary for our furry friends.

4. Keep Halloween plants such as pumpkins and corn out of reach. Although they are relatively nontoxic, such plants can induce gastrointestinal upset should your pets ingest them in large quantities. Intestinal blockage can even occur if large pieces are swallowed.

5. Pet Costumes. Make pet costumes comfortable and supervise your pet while in costume

Please bring your unwanted or outgrown coats, hats, scarves and gloves to our office.

We will distribute them to the clients of: Common Pantry, Heartland Human Care Service & Lincoln Square Friendship Center. These non-profits are in our neighborhood, caring for those who need our support

47th Ward Infrastructure Update

Check out the infrastructure map on our website.

Lawrence Avenue Streetscape

  • Street paving on Lawrence between Ravenswood and Clark will begin next week (the final week of October).  The street will be milled, paved, and striped over the course of about a week.  Additionally, the new crosswalks will be installed (in early November) after the street has been resurfaced, which will take approximately a week as long as the weather cooperates. The stretch between Western and Ravenswood has been completed and thermoplastic striping and stamped asphalt crosswalk markings have been installed along this stretch. As always, pay close attention to parking restrictions.
  • New pedestrian refuge islands (including ADA compliant ramps) have been installed along the entire stretch between Western and Clark. ADA ramps are being installed to line up with the street crossings at the pedestrian islands.
  • Sidewalk and curb/gutter replacement has been finished up along the last stretch, which is on the south side of Lawrence between Ravenswood and Clark.  Sidewalks, ramps, and bus pads have been poured.
  • Bike racks, chairs, trash receptacles, and benches are being installed all along the corridor.
  • Sewer and electrical work continues along the corridor. Most of the new street light poles have been installed and old poles have been removed.  As the remaining poles are removed, these areas will be filled in with brick pavers or concrete.
  • Landscaping work for fall plantings in Claremont Plaza and elsewhere between Western and Damen began last week and will continue through early November.  Trees along the entire project will be installed by early November as well.  Plantings between Damen and Clark will be performed in the spring.  Any additional punch list items that are not addressed this fall will be addressed in the spring.
