Dear Neighbor,
Over the past few years, emerald ash borer, severe storms, and other impacts have led to the loss of some of our parkway trees. While the City's Bereau of Forestry continues its effort to catch up on the backlog of tree trims and plantings, my office is working with Openlands to provide a relatively low-cost way for residents to replace trees in the parkway through their Chicago Community Trees Program.
If we identify enough people willing to help plant the trees and commit to watering them for three years, Openlands will provide the trees for $100 per applicant. This program is a great opportunity to supplement the City's planting activity, and if you've lost a tree it may the quickest way to have it replaced.
Dara Salk has been leading a team of interns and volunteers who are reaching out to homeowners who have lost parkway trees. If you are interested in participating in this program, please contact Dara at 773-868-4747 or dara@chicago47.org by July 28th.
#11 Bus Survey
Since launching the survey on the #11 last week, we have gathered nearly 1000 responses. Thanks to those of you who have participated. If you haven't had a chance to give your feedback, please be sure to complete the survey, and let your voice be heard on this issue. If you, or someone you know, can't complete the online survey, there are a number of neighborhood locations that have paper copies available. Check the flyer below this letter for more information.
Save the Date
Since taking office in 2011, my all-in has been our neighborhood schools. While GROW47 has largely focused on our elementary schools, supporting our neighborhood high schools is equally important. We have the opportunity to build a neighborhood K-12 system that will provide equity and stability for Chicago families.
On August 23, 2014 at 8:30am, join Lake View High School Principal Scott Grens, Lake View Partners, GROW47, local elected officials, and me for a Lake View High School Beautification Day! We will be painting, cleaning, and building community around our neighborhood high school. Rep. Ann Williams and Friends of Ameya Pawar (my political action committee) are picking up the cost of paint--all you have to do is show up, roll up your sleeves, and help us build a neighborhood K-12 system in our community.
You can sign up for the Lake View Beautification Day by clicking here.

Report Graffiti
As the weather turns warmer, we are seeing more graffiti throughout Chicago. Be sure to report any graffiti to our office (info@chicago47.org, 773-868-4747), 311, or through the Chicago Works app. You'll need to know the address, type of surface tagged, and whether or not the tag is more than six feet from the ground. Graffiti that contains profanity, hate language or is done on a church or school receives special attention. The faster we remove graffiti the less likely vandals are to target that area again. Thanks for your help! |

Pet Summer Safety Tips
- Water - Give your pets plenty of fresh, clean water. Animals can get dehydrated very quickly especially in the heat.
- Shade - Make sure your pet has a place to go to get out of the sun. Try to keep them indoors during extreme heat.
- Rest - Do not over-exercise your animal in the heat. On a sweltering day, the best time to exercise your pet is in the early morning or late evening.
- Watch - Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. In extreme heat, the temperature can rise in your vehicle very quickly. This can leave your pet vulnerable to heat stroke, which can onset very quickly.

Arts & Culture in the 47th Ward: Chicago Mosaic School by Luis Lopez Reichling
Located at 1806 W. Cuyler Avenue at Ravenswood Avenue, the Chicago Mosaic School (CMS) offers classes, workshops and lectures in one of the world's oldest art forms. Originating some 4,000 years ago, mosaic art has decorated villas, mosques, palaces and cathedrals throughout history, and later developed into an expressive art form during the 20th Century. Mosaic masterpieces decorate great architectural sites such as the San Vitale Basilica, the Great Mosque of Cordoba and the Lantern Roof while contemporary artists have experimented with mosaics as an expressive art form. CMS is the offspring of artist Karen Ami whose passion for mosaics took shape during her graduate studies at the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1990s. At the time, formal training in this ancient art form did not exist in the United States. "Everybody told me 'you have to go to Italy to study mosaics'...it did not make sense to me," recalls Ami who traveled abroad to study mosaic programs in Venice and Spilembergo. Upon returning, she collaborated with mosaic artists in Chicago to found the first non-profit mosaic arts school in the country. "I felt that the American model should be different," Ami explains. "Artists in the U.S. are less bound by specific ancient traditions ...more desirous of experimentation with different materials and contemporary applications." CMS instruction is based on the World Master Technique, which provides traditional training in tesserae and mortar techniques while encouraging students to experiment with mosaics as an expressive art form. Now in its 10th year, CMS has a staff of 11, including Ravenna master Matteo Randi who directs curriculum and instruction as educational director. It also hosts mosaic workshops by master artists from around the globe. It partners with local educational institutions such as After School Matters, and Audubon and Coonley elementary schools to provide arts education to local youth. Nearly 60 mosaic classes and workshops are offered throughout the year. At the end of August, CMS will offer master workshops and lectures by Maestro Verdiano Marzi, a master mosaic artist and instructor at the Louvre in Paris. Verdiano will be the CMS artist-in-residence in March 2015, coinciding with his first U.S. exhibit at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago. |

School Supply Drive Begins Next Week and will continue through August 22. Please remember the children whose parents can't afford to purchase a backpack and the other supplies needed to be successful at school. We collect the supplies and deliver them for the children whose families are clients of one of the three food pantries in the ward. We will have a comprehensive list in next week's newsletter. Please ask your neighbors or have a drive at work; every bit helps. Thanks for your generosity. A Great Big Thank You goes out to the caring people at Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce, Lincoln Square Businesses and PAWS Chicago Angels with Tails - 50 homeless animals were adopted at their event last Sunday! We are reminded by our neighbor Lillie that a Northcenter gem is closing. Katerina's live music venue - gone but never forgotten! After more than 13 years of bringing jazz, blues, funk, R&B, gypsy music and more to Northcenter, Katerina's closed its doors on June 30th. Musicians came from all over the world, as did the patrons to enjoy the unique atmosphere, warm welcome and scrumptious food. Watch for the club at 1945 Irving Park Road to reopen under the management of a former Katerina's employee.
