Dear Neighbor,

In December of 2012, the CTA eliminated the #11 Lincoln bus service between the Western Brown Line station and Fullerton.  At that time, I was joined by Cmsr. John Fritchey, State Rep. Ann Williams, thousands of neighborhood residents, local businesses, chambers of commerce and other community organizations in opposing the discontinuation of the service.  Since then, I have heard from many people all over the north side about how this cut continues to impact them.  I have not given up hope that we can see this bus line restored.

Pawar, Williams and Fritchey at CTA

I want to hear your story about the discontinuation of the #11 bus between the Western Brown Line and Fullerton.  My office has developed a short survey so you can make your voice heard.  It captures a small amount of data about this issue, and asks you to provide feedback in your own words on the elimination of the bus.  We will use this data and your stories to build a case for the CTA to restore the #11 bus service.

To take the survey online, please click here.  If someone you know can't complete the survey online, they can pick up a paper copy from my office at 4243 N. Lincoln Avenue.  We have identified a number of neighborhood locations on and around Lincoln Avenue that will distribute paper copies as well.  We will list those locations in next week's newsletter.

Thanks in advance for your participation.

Fountainhead Market

On Monday, my office hosted a community meeting to discuss the proposed Fountainhead Market for 1966 W. Montrose.  I am pleased to announce that I will be introducing an ordinance lifting the packaged goods moratorium on Montrose between Ravenswood and Damen to allow the owners of Fountainhead to move forward with their proposal.  This small store will be a place where people can find many of the products that are currently only available at the Fountainhead Restaurant for home consumption.  I want to thank the West Ravenswood Neighbors for working closely with my office throughout this process.

Street Sweeping
From April 1 until December 1 the Department of Streets and Sanitation has sweepers working in the 47th Ward to clear debris and dust from residential and arterial streets.  The schedule for street cleaning on residential and arterial streets can be found on chicago47.org
2014-2015 Residential Pick-up/Van Permits Available

If you are the owner of a pickup truck or van, you need a special permit to park on the residential streets in the 47th Ward.

The permits for the 2014-2015 season are now available.  Please bring your registration and city sticker information into our office along with your truck to receive your permit.

Report Graffiti

As the weather turns warmer, we are seeing more graffiti throughout Chicago.  Be sure to report any graffiti to our office (info@chicago47.org, 773-868-4747), 311, or through the Chicago Works app.  You'll need to know the address, type of surface tagged, and whether or not the tag is more than six feet from the ground.  Graffiti that contains profanity, hate language or is done on a church or school receives special attention.

The faster we remove graffiti the less likely vandals are to target that area again.  Thanks for your help!
Job Opportunities

Chicago Fire Department
The application period for the entry-level Firefighter/EMT exam is NOW OPEN and will run through September 16.  This is the period of time when applicants can sign up for the exam, which will be administered on December 13 and 14, 2014.  In 2006, the age to sit for the exam was 19 and the age to enter the academy was 20. CFD has lowered the age to sit for the exam and enter the academy to 18. It is their hope that younger individuals who get on the eligibility list will be motivated to attend college and stay out of trouble and will find a sense of opportunity about their futures.

Pet Summer Safety Tips
  • Water - Give your pets plenty of fresh, clean water.  Animals can get dehydrated very quickly especially in the heat.
  • Shade - Make sure your pet has a place to go to get out of the sun.  Try to keep them indoors during extreme heat.
  • Rest - Do not over-exercise your animal in the heat.  On a sweltering day, the best time to exercise your pet is in the early morning or late evening.
  • Watch - Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle.  In extreme heat, the temperature can rise in your vehicle very quickly.  This can leave your pet vulnerable to heat stroke, which can onset very quickly.

Arts & Culture in the 47th Ward: Northcenter Farmers Market
by Luis Lopez Reichling

Neighborhood farmers markets are one of the delights of Chicago summers. Featuring farm-fresh fruits and vegetables, regional honey, cheeses and free-range meat, these markets offer healthy alternatives to supermarket fare and provide a unique opportunity for urban communities to meet and interact with local farmers. The 47th Ward hosts two weekly City of Chicago sponsored farmers markets. The Lincoln Square Farmers Market, located in the public park lot off Leland & Lincoln (just east of the Western CTA Brown Line station), is open every Tuesday from 7 AM to 1 PM, and the Northcenter Farmers Market, located in the Northcenter Town Square by the Belle Plaine streetend just west of Damen, is open every Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM. Both offer a diversity of produce, cheese and meats that are 100% local and fresh, as well as opportunities to connect with neighbors and businesses.

Last Saturday, I stopped by the Northcenter Market to check out the produce and cheeses. Families with young children, local hipsters and residents of a local senior center were shopping and socializing. "This is a wonderful way for children to know about farmers, for parents to spend time with their kids and the community to get to know each other," observed Rene Gelder, a farmer from Michigan. Farmers and produce come from Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin, and include some excellent cheeses from just outside Chicago!

Throughout history, meals, food and summer markets have brought neighbors together. Don't miss the opportunity to try delicious regional products and enjoy the family-friendly ambiance at our local farmers markets! Open Tuesdays and Saturdays from June through October. For information on other Chicago farmers markets, click here.

47th Ward Repair Café

Last Saturday's Repair Café brought us new challenges, neighbors we've never met, several items kept out of the landfill and lots of laughs! Our Repair Coaches fixed a lamp, radio/cd player, a vacuum cleaner and an olive-wood salad tong (a gift from Egypt). There is no item too small or big - for our coaches to undertake. The only thing that wasn't fixed was a small radio with a busted transformer. After Mike and Ernie worked hard to pull the radio apart and diagnose the problem, the owner told us with a grin that she purchased it for $1, so it would be OK if they didn't fix it! She is a dedicated "thrifter" like many others we meet at the Repair Cafe, and had purchased it at a yard sale down the street from her house on Claremont four years ago. That radio had a good long life!

Please add your skill to our little group. Bring us your torn or broken items
