On this day in 1901, New York became the first state to require license plates on cars.

Dear Neighbor,

On Monday, we cut the ribbon on the new $10 million dollar addition at Bell School.  The project relieves overcrowding at the school by adding a science lab, art room, music room, multipurpose kitchen, multipurpose dining/assembly room, and includes renovations to the existing building. The completion of this project is the result of a partnership between my office/#GROW47, Gov. Patrick Quinn, Senate President John Cullerton, Mayor Emanuel, Chicago Public Schools, the Public Building Commission, Principal Sandra Caudill, and the entire Bell School community.  A big "thank you" to everyone involved!

In Other News

  • #GROW47 and the Friends of McPherson secured a $4k grant for their outdoor campus project. We expect to break ground on Phase 1 of the project later this year.
  • Members of #GROW47 met with Northwestern University this week. Did you know Northwestern is developing the science/tech curriculum for Lake View High School's STEM program and for Amundsen High School's IB program? #GROW47 is going to work closely with Northwestern to strengthen the relationship between our neighborhood high schools and our elementary feeder schools. We will keep you posted on our progress.  To learn more about #GROW47, click here.

  • The 47th Ward Office issued the first-ever sidewalk cafe permit for Lawrence Avenue! Himmel's will be opening their sidewalk cafe later this spring. Our vision for a pedestrian and retail friendly Lawrence Avenue is quickly taking shape.
  • Benjamin Schiller is opening a cocktail/wine bar concept in the new Roots Pizza development (2200 W. Lawrence). More on this soon!

Tomorrow is the annual 47th Ward Spring Clean & Green.  In addition to the many neighborhood groups completing projects, my office is hosting an electronics and paper recycling event at the 47th Ward Yard at 5333 N. Western from 10am to 1pm.  We are also collecting books, bikes, crutches and sewing machines. You can find more information in last week's newsletter.

Please remember that the Ravenswood Run 5k is taking place on Sunday, April 27th.  More information on the route can be found below.

Have a great weekend!

2013-2014 Residential Pickup Permits

If you drive a pickup truck or van for your personal use, you need a residential permit to park legally overnight on a residential street.  The truck must be registered to your home address in the 47th Ward.

Simply bring your truck/van into the 47th Ward Office.  Note your city sticker and license plate numbers.  47th Ward staff will ensure the truck is not used for commercial use and issue you a permit.

More information is

available here.  If you have any questions please contact the 47th Ward Office.

Staff from Cmsr. Gainer and Cmsr. Fritchey's offices will be at the 47th Ward Office on
April 30th, Wednesday from 4pm to 7pm to assist you.  If you cannot make this time, please call them at the numbers listed above.

Report Graffiti

As the weather turns warmer, we are seeing more graffiti throughout Chicago.  Be sure to report any graffiti to our office (info@chicago47.org, 773-868-4747), 311, or through the Chicago Works app.  You'll need to know the address, type of surface tagged, and whether or not the tag is more than six feet from the ground.  Graffiti that contains profanity, hate language or is done on a church or school receives special attention.

The faster we remove graffiti the less likely vandals are to target that area again.  Thanks for your help!

Arts & Culture in the 47th Ward:
Ravenswood Community Orchestra & Laurie's Planet of Sound
A Series of Weekly Articles by Office Intern Luis Reichling, Senior at St. Benedict Preparatory School

The Ravenswood Community Orchestra (RCO) is a local ensemble of 60 volunteer musicians who perform three classical music concerts each year in the Ravenswood neighborhood. Founded at St. Benedict Church in 2000, RCO is composed of musicians of diverse skill levels, ages and musical backgrounds. They share a passion for classical music and a commitment to making concert music accessible to the community. Open to all musicians without a formal audition, RCO currently has openings for string players and percussionists (click here).

If tickets to the CSO are beyond your budget or you want to introduce your children to classical music in a setting where squirming is not "verboden," Ravenswood Community Orchestra is an ideal opportunity to enjoy Haydn, Rossini, De Falla, Brahms and other composers without the hassle of traveling to the Loop. RCO's next concert is on May 17th (see 47th Ward A&C listing below).

Another local music treasure is Laurie's Planet of Sound at 4639 N. Lincoln Avenue, voted one of the best record stores in the United States by Rolling Stone Magazine. Founded in 1997 by vinyl aficionado John Laurie, it features an eclectic selection of vinyl, DVDs, CDs and vintage posters, not to mention Pee-Wee Herman fun packs. Music ranges broadly from 60s psychedelic to indie to cult classics, and the staff is very knowledgeable. For those of us who did not grow up with turntables and VCRs, Laurie's offers the additional thrill of experiencing a "listening station" and other relics from the pre-iPod era.

With the advent of digital recording, vinyl records have made a comeback, inspiring the emergence of serious vinyl collectors. Laurie's meets the needs of the most discriminating connoisseur yet its broad collection remains accessible to the casual listener.

Jumping Jack Forms
Are In! You can print them off of our website or stop into the office. Once again the city is offering a limited number of Jumping Jacks for Block Parties on Saturdays & Sundays from May 24 - August 31. Please fill out the form and email or mail the application directly to the city. If you really want one, plan your Block Party for a Sunday.

Hopefully the Polar Vortex has led to depletion in the rat population in the neighborhood. However, if you want a permanent, non-poisonous solution to rodents in your part of the block - look no further than Tree House Humane Societies Cats at Work Program! Watch this video and see for yourself how this win-win-win program works. The only losers are the RATS! Email me at dara@chicago47.org for more information.

Friends of Animal Care & Control began a kitty foster care program 4 yrs. ago. They are in desperate need of foster families. Having been a foster family for several years, I can tell you my children loved it and were always happy to give the kitties back when they were ready for adoption because they knew that every one of them were going to a loving family. After a few weeks with us, all of the kitties even loved dogs! Think about becoming a foster family. Email; kat@fcacc.org

If you can't foster, consider making a monetary donation for medical care, spay/neuter surgeries, inoculations and more. Volunteers are needed every single day at ACC. Email Susan; volunteerwithfriends@gmail.com

Are you interested in making a difference in the lives of older adults who need just a little support to remain independent? Then become a program volunteer!

Join Concordia Place in helping your neighbors. The program helps to reduce loneliness and isolation among area seniors. The Friendly Visitor program provides the human connection necessary to enhance a senior's quality of life and overall well-being. Volunteers help seniors by performing services such as transportation, medical appointments, grocery shopping, phone outreach and well-being visits.

Each program volunteer is trained, supervised and given the proper tools to make a positive difference. In return you are enriching your own life by making a difference for someone else. Our volunteers are matched with a senior on a one-to-one basis.

To become a volunteer, please call Martha DeLeon at 773.463.1600 ext. 221 or email marthad@concordiaplace.org. For more information visit our website @  www.concordiaplace.org

We are officially members of a worldwide movement! Please check out www.repaircafe.org . We'll soon be listed on their website.  So far we will offer the skills of: 2 generally handy-people, 2 sewers (with sewing machines) and a knitter/jewelry repair person. Do you have a skill you'd like to share?

This is a win-win-win-win: people with skills help others, others learn, an item is kept out of the landfill and we all build a greater sense of community in our neighborhood!

Chicago River Work (east side) Berteau to Montrose (from Riverbank Neighbors)

Please check out this updated landscaping plan for the bank.

New to the plan:

  • removal of all Ailanthus, honeysuckle and buckthorn (all invasives);
  • add soil to the rip rap on the upper sections of the project area to make planting easier and recovery quicker;
  • substitute for the elderberry, since we said we have a thriving e-berry community already;
  • substituted a cover seed mix instead of the IDOT mix we objected to;
  • four species of gray dogwood (stakes) that a vigorous colonizers for the new territories.

These will be substantial new lands, with the bank secured, and planting begun. Riverbank Neighbors will be able to enrich species diversity over time and introduce many new forbs. Habitat for birds and reptiles and amphibians and mammals will be greatly improved.

Horner Park Riverbank Project (from US Army Corps)

Tree cutting is complete. Erosion Control consisting of silt fence, silt curtain, inlet protection is being installed. Excavation of topsoil, stripping, fill disposal and topsoil placement has started.   Excavation to install Limestone/Flagstone will begin this week. Root Wads will also be installed along the river bank.

USACE was informed of a complaint about truck traffic on Montrose. In response, no parking signs have been installed so that trucks can line up along the curb and off the main thru traffic lane. Truck traffic is expected until early-June.

  • Ravenswood (west side) between Berteau and Grace landscaping projects are expected to begin late April or early May along the base of the walls along the Metra tracks.  Short closures will be necessary to install the new plants, so pay attention to parking restriction signs.
  • Ravenswood (west side) between Lawrence and Berteau landscaping projects are expected to start mid May.  Again, short closures will be required to install the new trees and plants.  Fencing is also being installed in the planting areas.
