47th Ward Spring Clean & Green

On Saturday, April 26, 2014, my office is partnering with neighborhood groups and the Department of Streets and Sanitation for our annual Spring Clean & Green.

This is an excellent opportunity to join with neighbors to make meaningful improvements to our community.  Throughout the day, block clubs and neighborhood groups will sweep gutters, weed parkways, and prepare their gardens for summer plantings. If your group needs industrial trash bags, please email Dara in my office.

Neighborhood groups hosting clean and green events include:

In addition, my office is also hosting a recycling event located at the 47th Ward Yard (5333 N. Western) from 10am to 1pm. Drop off electronic waste and paper. You can also drop off used books, DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes, bikes, crutches, and sewing machines. These items will be donated to Working Bikes and Open Books.

I hope you will join us in making this year's Spring Clean & Green our best yet.  Enjoy your weekend!

Sincerely,
Ameya

Legislation on Mandated Fire Sprinklers

State Representative Sara Feigenholtz has introduced an important piece of legislation regarding the controversial issue of mandated fire sprinklers in Illinois. The goal of House Bill 4609 is to give more people a seat at the table on the issue of fire sprinklers in Illinois, so we can come to a proactive solution before we are faced with another unfunded fire sprinkler mandate proposal from the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal like last summer.

The bill creates a task force of experts that will research and consider the effects of any legislation requiring fire sprinklers in homes, businesses, and high-rise buildings and examine all questions related to increasing rent prices, insurance rates, and installation costs. After exploring all possibilities, the group will provide a comprehensive report with recommendations to the General Assembly. It would then be the responsibility of the elected General Assembly, not the State Fire Marshal and a small, obscure committee called the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules (JCAR), to adopt any rules requiring the installation of fire sprinklers in any structure.

Rep. Feigenholtz has recently unveiled the  Lakefront Coalition for Responsible Fire Sprinkler Policy petition to show community support for her bill. Ald. Pawar added his name in support of this common-sense legislation, and encourages you to do the same.

Arts & Culture in the 47th Ward: Access Contemporary Music
A Series of Weekly Articles by Office Intern Luis Reichling, Senior at St. Benedict Preparatory School

What comes to mind when you think of classical music? Is it Beethoven in an 18th Century wig or a Vienna concert house with Mozart? Well this is not what "classical" music is today, and the ensemble Access Contemporary Music demonstrates that classical music is still well and alive without the 18th Century or Beethoven. In fact, classical music is supposedly in their golden age according to the company. Access Contemporary Music wants to change the way the public perceives "classical" music; they know that classical music today is more relevant and modern than ever.

Access Contemporary Music was founded by Seth Boustead who came up with the idea in 2000 but did not officially open until May of 2004. The company is passionate in its mission of making contemporary classical music accessible to the masses. This musical form is just as prevalent as other music genres in the field and is performed by a diversity of well-regarded musicians. Contemporary classical music styles can range from post-minimalism to world music but a hallmark of the music is actually that there are no consistent styles. ACM's ensembles are unique in that they often commission their own work and house world premieres. The members come from as far as Jerusalem and Rio de Janeiro, and play a variety of pieces as part of Access Contemporary Music. ACM also collaborates with many other companies around in Chicago, such as the Strawdog Theater, eighth blackbird, the Chicago Architecture Foundation and several radio stations across the country. They hope to go international within the next few years.

Not only performing music, Access Contemporary Music provides instruction to aspiring musicians. The ACM School of Music, with Ravenswood location at 1758 W. Wilson Avenue, now has over 220 students enrolled and is the fourth largest community school in the City. To make music relatively more affordable for everyone reasonable prices and scholarships are offered. ACM also has a variety of events coming up including the praised Sound of Silent Film Festival on April 29th which involves new musical pieces by the ensemble. Another future event to take note of will be the Architectural Artifacts on June 17th, a Goblin Market based on the poem of the same name. Take the time to reintroduce yourself to classical music at a reasonable price and you will not regret it! Visit www.acmusic.org.

This past August, Lane Tech High School's Principal, Dr. Christopher Dignam, was one of six high school principals (and the only one from a selective enrollment high school) to receive the Principal's Incentive Award from Chicago Public Schools in recognition of the school's growth in reading and math scores as well as closing achievement gaps. Lane's standardized test scores increased 2.03 points in reading and .87 points in math from 2012 to 2013. The school's overall ACT composite score increased by 1.08 points. The Incentive Award is funded by private donors, such as philanthropist Penny Pritzker.

In March this year, Dr. Dignam was also awarded the Scholastic Press Association of Chicago/McCormick Principal of the Year. The Principal of the Year award acknowledges the important role principals play in high school journalism.   Dr. Dignam was nominated by the Lane Tech Warrior teacher sponsor, Seth Johnson, in recognition of his support for student journalists as well as his position against censorship.

Are Bunnies or Squirrels tempted by your tender plants? Here are good suggestions from Kim Kaulas. Use inexpensive barbecue skewers broken in ˝ to form a circle around the tasty plant, sharp side up, some facing the plants and some facing away from the plants. Once the plants are grown, simple remove the skewers. Another method is to use small grid wire mesh "hardware cloth" to make a collar to surround the base of the plant. These aren't child-friendly options, but they give the plants a chance to grow.

Friends of Animal Care & Control began a kitty foster care program 4 yrs. ago. They are in desperate need of foster families. Having been a foster family for several years, I can tell you my children loved it and were always happy to give the kitties back when they were ready for adoption because they knew that every one of them were going to a loving family. After a few weeks with us, all of the kitties even loved dogs! Think about becoming a foster family. Email; kat@fcacc.org

If you can't foster, consider making a monetary donation for medical care, spay/neuter surgeries, inoculations and more. Volunteers are needed every single day at ACC. Email Susan; volunteerwithfriends@gmail.com

Are you interested in making a difference in the lives of older adults who need just a little support to remain independent? Then become a program volunteer!

Join Concordia Place in helping your neighbors. The program helps to reduce loneliness and isolation among area seniors. The Friendly Visitor program provides the human connection necessary to enhance a senior's quality of life and overall well-being. Volunteers help seniors by performing services such as transportation, medical appointments, grocery shopping, phone outreach and well-being visits.

Each program volunteer is trained, supervised and given the proper tools to make a positive difference. In return you are enriching your own life by making a difference for someone else. Our volunteers are matched with a senior on a one-to-one basis.

To become a volunteer, please call Martha DeLeon at 773.463.1600 ext. 221 or email marthad@concordiaplace.org. For more information visit our website @  www.concordiaplace.org

We are officially members of a worldwide movement! Please check out www.repaircafe.org . We'll soon be listed on their website.  So far we will offer the skills of: 2 generally handy-people, 2 sewers (with sewing machines) and a knitter/jewelry repair person. Do you have a skill you'd like to share?

This is a win-win-win-win: people with skills help others, others learn, an item is kept out of the landfill and we all build a greater sense of community in our neighborhood!

Chicago River Work (east side) Berteau to Montrose (from Riverbank Neighbors)

Please check out this updated landscaping plan for the bank.

New to the plan:

  • removal of all Ailanthus, honeysuckle and buckthorn (all invasives);
  • add soil to the rip rap on the upper sections of the project area to make planting easier and recovery quicker;
  • substitute for the elderberry, since we said we have a thriving e-berry community already;
  • substituted a cover seed mix instead of the IDOT mix we objected to;
  • four species of gray dogwood (stakes) that a vigorous colonizers for the new territories.

These will be substantial new lands, with the bank secured, and planting begun. Riverbank Neighbors will be able to enrich species diversity over time and introduce many new forbs. Habitat for birds and reptiles and amphibians and mammals will be greatly improved.

Horner Park Riverbank Project (from US Army Corps)

Winter conditions are still delaying contractor progress. The exact start date is still pending construction plan approval.
