On this day in 1929, the St. Valentine's Day Massacre took place when seven rival gangsters were machine-gunned to death in a garage at 2122 N. Clark St.

The 47th Ward Office will be CLOSED on Monday, February 17th

Dear Neighbor,

I am pleased to announce that we have a new business coming to Lawrence Avenue! Soon, Ampersand Wine Bar will call 1742 W. Lawrence home. This wine bar concept will serve pastries and coffee in the morning and a fine selection of wines and craft beer in the evening. We held a successful community meeting this week, and as a result my office is working with the Ampersand owner, Darren McGraw (47th Ward resident and pastry chef), to introduce an ordinance to lift the liquor license moratorium on  Lawrence between Ashland and Ravenswood. Darren came to my office to discuss the 1742 W. Lawrence location after seeing and hearing about the major projects along Lawrence Avenue. After working with our office, Darren decided to move on the vacant space. I want to thank and welcome Ampersand to the Ravenswood community. I will keep you updated on Ampersand as the project moves forward.

As Darren begins the process of opening his business, we are getting many calls from prospective business owners about Lawrence Avenue. Economic development efforts are picking up steam! After taking office in 2011, the revitalization of Lawrence Avenue became a central goal of my first term. For decades, the empty storefronts, an underutilized 3 acre Sears parking lot, and a lack of walkability plagued economic development activity. As such, my office developed a pedestrian and retail-friendly vision for Lawrence which centered on attracting an anchor business to pair with the Lawrence Avenue Streetscape. In 2012, we were able to ink a deal to secure a Mariano's, LA Fitness, and a new residential development on the underutilized Sears lot. These projects served as a tipping point -- as these big projects began to take shape, smaller businesses began to call our office. Today, I am proud to report that Band of Bohemia, Roots Pizza, and Waxman Spa are a few examples of the type of economic development my we are working on in my office.

In addition to attracting new businesses, job creation along the Lawrence corridor was also a central theme. When I took office, the City of Chicago was still reeling from the impacts of the Great Recession of 2008. City unemployment surged over 9% in 2011. I am proud to report that the projects we initiated along Lawrence Avenue created over 500 construction and retail jobs!

Click here for more information on major developments.

Of course, there is more going on than just economic development on Lawrence Avenue. Lawrence Avenue is also home to McPherson Elementary. Since 2011, my office and GROW47 have been working non-stop with Principal Carmen Mendoza, Bob Farster, Kim Silver, and the Friends of McPherson to promote and organize around this amazing neighborhood school. Just yesterday, I attended the 'Big Reveal' for McPherson Elementary's outdoor campus design. Together, we have identified nearly $600k in funding towards this campus redesign. If all goes as planned, (we are still working to solidify details) we will break ground on Phase 1 this year! McPherson Elementary is the centerpiece of remaking Lawrence Avenue and I urge you to get involved. Find out more by clicking here

I want to thank all of you for attending community meetings, organizing potlucks to attract new business, and providing valuable input to my office. What was a vision in 2011 is now becoming reality.   And there is much more to come!

In the meantime, I want to hear from you on our Lawrence Avenue vision. Make sure to use the official Twitter/Facebook hashtag when you do: #ANewLawrence.

Sad Goodbyes

I also want to announce that two members of the 47th Ward team are moving on to new endeavors. Bill Higgins, our transportation planner, is leaving to take a position as a City Planner with the Chicago Department of Transportation. Normally, I get to take credit for all the hard work my team puts in but today I want to thank Bill for all his hard work and public service. His work led to reforming the 47th Ward permit parking process, the redesign of the Lawrence Avenue Streetscape, the coordination of multiple infrastructure projects, and the implementation of Divvy. Thank you, Bill. We are going to miss you.

Charna Epstein, 47th Ward Chief of Staff, is also leaving the 47th Ward Office. Charna has been the captain of our ship and was the key driver in helping me pass six pieces of city-wide legislation in my first three years in office. Charna is leaving to take a position as the Chief Operating Officer with the University of Chicago's Urban Education Institute. Charna --thank you for your service.

The New Guy Behind the Guy

I want to welcome Jim Poole as my new Chief of Staff. Jim has been the guy you work with to handle city service issues. I met Jim at the University of Chicago's School of Social Service Administration. Jim brings a social worker's approach to public service which has always been a great asset to our office. Starting Tuesday, Jim is going to manage the day-to-day operations in the 47th Ward Office and help me work on legislative issues in City Council. I want to congratulate Jim for becoming the new 'Guy behind the Guy.'

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,
Ameya

2013-2014 Residential Pickup Permits

If you drive a pickup truck or van for your personal use, you need a residential permit to park legally overnight on a residential street.  The truck must be registered to your home address in the 47th Ward.

Simply bring your truck/van into the 47th Ward Office.  Note your city sticker and license plate numbers.  47th Ward staff will ensure the truck is not used for commercial use and issue you a permit.

More information is

available here.  If you have any questions please contact the 47th Ward Office.

Winter Parking Bans
From December 1, 2012 to April 1, 2013 certain arterial streets in Chicago have two additional types of parking restrictions related to snow fall. One pertains to times when there is 2 inches or more of snow on the street and the other restricts overnight parking, regardless of snowfall. See maps here.  Please call or email the 47th Ward Office with any questions.

The practice of "Dibs" by holding a spot for your car after snowfall is both illegal and unneighborly. Rather than putting items into the street, help your neighbors clear out other parking spots. Objects left in the street may be removed.

Openwall: Common Threads Opening Reception

Alderman Ameya Pawar's vision of highlighting the works of local artists in his office has been realized through the OpenWall Chicago initiative directed by Patricia Larkin Green. Every quarter the OpenWall Chicago committee determines a theme, then selects and displays artwork in this public space.

The latest exhibit, Common Threads, features the artwork of senior artists living and creating in the 47th ward. The show runs through March 31st.

Many of the exhibit's contributing artists are members of the Senior Artists Network (SAN), a not-for-profit organization committed to promoting and fostering the talents of Chicago-area artists age 50 or older. The installation's artwork runs the gamut, from dramatic photographs and vivid oil paintings to mixed media and color pastels. The array of artwork is both stunning and varied, and it testifies to the talent and diversity of the seasoned artists living in the neighborhood. The public is invited to mingle with the alderman and his staff, the local community and the artists to discuss their works at the opening reception on February 16th from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.

Featured Artists:  Meredith Dytch, Thomas Gianni, Shirley Nannini, June Nichols, Ann Ponce, Gloria Rigoni, Kathy Blankley Roman, Judith Roth, Iku Shimizu, Kate Tully, Candace Wark and Bonnie Zak. To learn more about the artists and the event, please check out the OpenWall Chicago website and leave your comments.

Director Patricia Larkin Green said, "I am a fast believer that artists thrive in a supportive community. As artists we are most vulnerable when we are taking risks. Artists need to create, to exhibit and see each other's work.  OpenWall Chicago supports our artistic community."

Snow Corps

Chicago Snow Corps is a program that connects volunteers with residents in need of snow removal - such as seniors and residents with disabilities.

While winter can be hazardous for everyone here in the City of Chicago, it can be especially difficult for elderly and physically disabled residents, who may not have the ability or resources to remove snow from their sidewalks and walkways. Chicago Snow Corps aims to help minimize potential heavy-snow emergencies by pairing volunteers with blocks where elderly and disabled citizens have requested help.

To request a volunteer, or become a volunteer, to shovel your block in case of extreme snowfall, call 311 or call or email Dara in the 47th Ward Office at 773-868-4747. This is a volunteer-matching service. The City will do its best to match those who have requested assistance. Also, if you have a neighbor who can use a hand, please let your neighborhood group know or call the office.

Don't miss Lane Tech's production of Kiss Me Kate!  Lane's winter musical is based on William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, with music and lyrics by Cole Porter.

Performances are:

  • Friday, February 14 at 7:00 pm
  • Saturday, February 15 at 7:00 pm

Admission: $7.  Tickets are sold in front of the auditorium doors before each show.  Enter through parking lot door "M."

Need to make some Valentine weekend plans? Join Concordia Place on February 16 from 5-7 p.m. at Revolution Brewing for the 2014 Concordia Place BrewFest. Revolution Brewing is one of the hottest spots in Chicago and their beer is nationally recognized with favorites like Anti-Hero IPA, Bottom Up Wit and Eugene Porter. Guests will enjoy heavy appetizers and unlimited craft brews.

Tickets are $45 in advance before February 4 and a limited number of tickets will be sold at the door for $60. You can upgrade your night for $20 and get the VIP experience! The upgrade will include a private tour of the brewery, a chance to meet the brewer and also samples of the latest brews available.

Are you a senior who would be willing to share some thoughts with a local documentary filmmaker for about 30 minutes, on Monday, February 24, from 12-2pm.

She would like to ask 3 questions:
What is your fondest memory?
What is your biggest regret?
And finally, what message do you have for younger people?

(Isn't it wonderful that a young person is interested in what elders have to say?)

Call Dara at 773-868-4747 if you would like to participate.

Ah, warm weather - It's coming - I know it is. Here's a way to spend a day in warm climate without leaving the city and plan for fun we can have in our exciting city this Spring & Summer.

We received a letter from the Chicago Botanic Gardens inviting you to attend their unique programs for young and old. If you know a Chicago Public School student who is interested in Environmental Science or Sustainable Agriculture, there is no better place than this. Click here for more info.

Early Voting

The Primary is March 18. If, like me, you enjoy voting early - it runs from Monday, March 3 - Saturday, March 15 at Welles Park; Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm and on Sunday 9am-3pm

Under a state law that went into effect Jan. 1, someone can vote at age 17 in a primary election - such as the one scheduled on March 18 to pick each party's candidates for governor, congressmen and some local offices - if the teen will turn 18 before the general election related to that primary, which in this case will occur Nov. 4.

Our 47th Ward Green Council is looking for folks who want to work on an initiative that started in the Netherlands and is taking off all over the world. www.repaircafe.org

We will have a space monthly for folks to bring broken items that need fixing; a small appliance, sewing a hem, or a broken chair leg. What we need are interested handy folks to share their knowledge and skills. We have the place - now we need some handy folks who want to help keep items out of the landfill and help their neighbors.

We will continue to collect warm items all winter; as we are told more are needed. Please clean out your closets; someone else can use your children's outgrown jackets and the coats, hats and gloves you no longer wear?  We also welcome donations of pet food, towels and blankets for those pets less fortunate than our own.

On the 3rd Friday of the month The Lincoln Square Friendship Center 2733 W. Lawrence is the home to Friendship Pet Food Pantry. Pet food is provided to folks who are having a hard time feeding their beloved pets.

Upcoming dates are: February 21 & March 21 from 3-5pm

If you know anyone who needs assistance, please pass this along.

In their 1st three distribution dates a month's supply of food was given to:

92 cats & 38 dogs!

Kitten season is coming! Can You Help?

Do yourself a favor and help Tree House Humane Society save more deserving kittens. We provide the medical care, you provide the space, TLC, and transportation to their appointments at our Shelter Headquarters located at 1212 W. Carmen Ave. in Uptown (or if it is more convenient, appointments can also be scheduled at our BDVM Mac Lean Clinic at 1629 N. Ashland Ave in Bucktown). When they are finished with their treatments, the kitties come to Tree House for adoption! And, if kittens aren't your thing, we always have adults that need foster care too. We can only save more lives with the help of compassionate people like you! If you are interested, please contact Ollie@treehouseanimals.org .

(Don't know if you or your children could bear giving the foster kitties up for adoption? Our family fostered dozens of kitties and just knowing they were all quickly adopted by loving people and that by taking in another litter we were saving even more lives, made it very easy and rewarding! Call me.)

The Tree House Humane Society is excited to tell you that during the month of February Cook County is offering two $40 rebates per household towards spay/neuter surgery for feral/stray cats as well as house cats.

For feral cats, the Trap-Neuter-Return package is FREE with the rebate.  House pets receive $40 off an already heavily discounted rate.  Residents must live in Cook County.  Cats must also receive a rabies vaccine at the time of surgery.  (Please note that kittens under 3 months can't yet receive a rabies vaccine and are therefore not eligible.)

Tree House handles all of the paperwork, so all you need to do is book an appointment by calling their Bucktown clinic at 773-227-5535.

There is no better time than now to get any intact cats in for spay/neuter surgery.  Please help us spread the word!

Sulzer needs your old games.  Thanks to our neighbors who have donated games for the Sulzer's Game Night!  If you have games that your family no longer uses, please bring them to the 47th Ward Office or to Sulzer Library. Their ever-popular "Game Night" could use a few more board games like Sorry, Chess, Life, Uno, Jenga, Rummy Cube, etc.

47th Ward Infrastructure Update

Check out the infrastructure map on our webpage!

Water Main Replacement for Hutchinson between Lincoln and Damen

Water Mains Coming Soon:

Hoyne (Irving Park to Grace): Start Late February

Byron (Damen to Ravenswood): Start in early March

Berteau (Bell to Damen): Start in mid-March.

The Chicago Cubs have provided some additional funding for infrastructure improvements in the 44th 46th and 47th Wards.   In the 47th ward we will be getting new residential street lighting on: W Byron (Clark to Ashland), N Janssen (Addison to Irving Park) and N Greenview (Addison to Irving Park).

Chicago River Work (east side) Berteau to Montrose (from Riverbank Neighbors)

Please check out this updated landscaping plan for the bank.

New to the plan:

  • removal of all Ailanthus, honeysuckle and buckthorn (all invasives);
  • add soil to the rip rap on the upper sections of the project area to make planting easier and recovery quicker;
  • substitute for the elderberry, since we said we have a thriving e-berry community already;
  • substituted a cover seed mix instead of the IDOT mix we objected to;
  • four species of gray dogwood (stakes) that a vigorous colonizers for the new territories.

These will be substantial new lands, with the bank secured, and planting begun. Riverbank Neighbors will be able to enrich species diversity over time and introduce many new forbs. Habitat for birds and reptiles and amphibs and mammals will be greatly improved.

METRA Traffic Closures and Detours Around Ravenswood Avenue

  • Leland Ave Full Closure will be up until April, 2014.
  • Ravenswood from Lawrence to Leland Ave Full Closure will be up until April, 2014 on the west side of Ravenswood.
  • Ravenswood (east side) between Ainslie and Winnemac some of the landscaping features will be installed before snowfall in preparation for planting in the spring.  Blockades may be in place on the street to make room for the work to be done however there is not a parking restriction when workers are not present.

For more information, visit the infrastructure section of our website or contact Bill Higgins at bill@chicago47.org or 773-549-2745.
