Greetings! |
First, I would like to take a moment to personally wish you a Happy New Year. I hope you had a wonderful holiday season.
As you may know, each year we adopt a theme for the year that is meant to help us serve our clients better. Last year was to "make each client feel like our only client". This year is the year of education. We have received feedback from clients, friends and prospective clients telling us they want seminars to help them better digest what's going on in the investment world and how it relates to them. Therefore, I am asking for some guidance from you. Please tell me what you want to learn about, where/ how you want to learn it. How long should each class run? How many classes per year are you interested in? Are these classes something that should be offered only to JPA clients or should they be open to anyone?
I look forward to your guidance. Thanks in advance. |

Market Commentary |
Whether a US stock investor was looking back or looking forward as 2010 turned to 2011, the view was positive. The S&P 500 stock index gained +15.1% (total return result including the reinvestment of dividends) in calendar year 2010, well ahead of the index's 50-year average (i.e., 1961-2010) of +9.7% per year. 2011 is the 3rd year of President Obama's 4-year term that began in January 2009. The S&P 500 has been positive on a total return basis during each of the last 17 "presidential 3rd years." The last time the S&P 500 was negative during a "presidential 3rd year" was 1939 or 72 years ago. The average annual performance of the stock index during a "presidential 3rd year" since 1950 (note that there have been 15 "presidential 3rd years" since 1950) is a gain of +22.0% (source: BTN Research).
The 388,000 weekly jobless claims reported last Thursday (12/30/10) by the government was the lowest number nationally since July 2008 or 2 ½ years ago. The total, which represents initial claims by out-of-work Americans for unemployment benefits, had ranged between 400,000 to 500,000 per week throughout 2010, peaking at 504,000 during one week in mid-August last year (source: Department of Labor). |
Notable Numbers |

1. +1,000% GAIN - Over the last 312 months (26 years) through 12/31/10, the S&P 500 is up +1,086% (total return), or an annualized +10.0% per year. The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks that is generally considered representative of the US stock market (source: BTN Research).
2. UP vs. DOWN - The split between "up" and "down" days for the S&P 500 stock index over the last 50 years (i.e., 1961-2010) is 53% "up" and 47% "down." The split during calendar year 2010 was 57/43 (source: BTN Research).
3. MISSING THE BEST DAYS- The total return for the S&P 500 was +15.1% (total return) in calendar year 2010. If you missed the 3 best percentage gain days last year, your total return gain falls to +3.4% (source: BTN Research).
4. MISSING THE WORST DAYS - The total return for the S&P 500 was +15.1% (total return) in calendar year 2010. If you missed the 3 worst percentage gain days last year, your total return gain rises to +28.1% (source: BTN Research).
