Greetings! |
In keeping with our focus on children for this month, I'm happy to introduce our Client in the Spotlight for September, Maria Bonet, Director/ Franchise Owner of Kidville in Scarsdale, NY. Please be sure to read about Maria below in our "Client in the Spotlight" section. Here is your weekly tip- Offer your children incentives for saving. Just like in many 401(k)'s that offer to match your contributions, do the same for the children in your life. For example "for every dollar you save I'll add an additional 15 cents up to $100.00". Explain that this is a guaranteed rate of return for your child of 15%. Of course the percentage and maximum match limits are completely up to you. You will be teaching your young investors the important habit of saving and the added value of receiving a matching contribution. This habit will help with the proper mindset when later on in life it's time to start saving to buy a house or to accumulate the funds needed to retire. |

Market Commentary |

After finishing August stock trading last Tuesday (8/31/10) down 4.6% (total return) YTD, the S&P 500 began the historically difficult 30 days of September, the worst performing month for the stock index over the last 2 decades. Proving again that averages calculated from past performance are not necessarily a predictor of future behavior, the S&P 500 stock index proceeded to gain +5.3% over the first 3 days of September, its 2nd best 3-day stretch of 2010 (source: BTN Research). Part of the advance of stock values came as a result of Friday's (9/03/10) monthly jobs report. Although the nation's unemployment rate rose to 9.6% and 54,000 jobs were lost across the country, stock investors managed a positive interpretation of the numbers. Their logic was based upon the fact that the private sector actually created +67,000 new jobs and that it was only the loss of 121,000 government jobs (mostly temporary census workers) that drove the overall result (source: Department of Labor). The late April explosion that tragically caused an estimated 206 million gallons of oil to spill into the Gulf of Mexico surprisingly has not had a negative impact on the price of oil. The cost of a barrel of oil was $83.45 on 4/20/10, falling to $74.60 as of last Friday (9/03/10). The nationwide average price of gasoline also fell over the same period, going from $2.86 a gallon to $2.68 (source: BP, CME Group). |
Notable Numbers |

1. BULL AND BEAR - Since bottoming on 3/09/09 (i.e., approximately 1 ½ years ago), the S&P 500 has gained +57.4% through the close of trading Friday 8/27/10 (change of the raw index not counting the impact of dividends). During this nearly 18 month bull market, the stock index has also experienced 6 different declines of at least 5%, including a 16.0% drop (source: BTN Research).
2. DOWN BUT NOT OUT - During the 2002-07 bull market for the S&P 500 which produced a gain of +101% (change of the raw index not counting the impact of dividends), the stock index suffered through a 14.7% drop just 5 months into what ultimately became a 5-year long bull market (source: BTN Research
3. CASH OUT - Only 19% of American workers plan to use the equity in their primary residence to finance their retirement by either selling the home, getting a reverse mortgage or taking out a home equity loan (source: SOA).
4. WAGES - The adjusted gross income required to rank in the top 1% of US taxpayers increased +6.2% per year from 1980 through 2007 (the last year for which data has been released), rising from $81,000 to $410,000. The adjusted gross income required to rank in the top 50% of US taxpayers increased +3.5% per year from 1980 through 2007, rising from $13,000 to $33,000 (source: Tax Foundation). |
Client Spotlight - September 2010
Maria Bonet, Kidville (Scarsdale, NY) |
Our client in the "Spotlight" for September is Maria Bonet, Director/ Franchise Owner of Kidville in Scarsdale, NY. Maria & her husband Tony live in Tuckahoe, NY with their two children.
Q. What is Kidville? A. Kidville is a place for families to go relax in a safe, clean and educational environment for their young children. We offer a range of classes for newborns through six year olds. Q. Does Kidville offer anything more than the classes you just mentioned? A. Absolutely, Kidville features an indoor Playspace, a retail boutique, and birthday parties for children up to age nine. Q. Do I need to have a membership or anything like that? If so, what is the cost? A. Membership is free with enrollment of a class. Q. What sets your Kidville apart from other places I can take my children? A. Quality. I am a Teacher first and a business owner second. Q. Please tell me what that means. A. I am a NYS certified teacher; I received my Masters degree from Iona College in early childhood education. I have taught 1st grade in both the Bronx and Bronxville public school systems. I take teaching the children that come to my facility very seriously. Children learn when they're having fun. Therefore we blend lessons and playtime together. Most of the children don't even realize they're learning. It's so much fun to watch. Q. What else goes on at Kidville? A. Well, even though it's not a formal part of the program, parents seem to find our store a great place to network with other parents. There have been discussions from which animal crackers taste the best to what's new @ the Zoo. Q. What is the Playspace? A. Playspace is open playtime, no classes. Just time to let the children play and explore while being supervised without the class structure. Please be sure to check our website to see what hours we are currently offering Playspace times. Q. What is your Phone #? A. (914) 600-5544 Q. What is the stores address? A.777 White Plains Rd. Scarsdale, NY 10583 Q. Do you have a website/ email address? A.
