Greetings!
JP Bio Pic
I'm happy to introduce our Client in the Spotlight for May,   Jo Ann Owner of
in Westchester county NY. Be sure to read about Jo Ann & check out the offer she has for any one that uses her services.

As I'm sure you know, I'm a big believer in continuing to strive to make myself better every day. In that vein, I'm thinking of changing the format of this part of our WMR for a personal (sometime what's John doing) note to something that you will hopefully find useful, a "tip of the week" format. I welcome your feedback. If there are certain tips you have come across, please send them to me & I will be very happy to use them.

My goal is to make this newsletter something that everyone on our distribution list can get something out of. Perhaps have a few talking points in mind for your next social event or office discussion on investing and the economy. Of course, we would love it if you were to forward your WMR on to others that you think might be interested in reading it too.

These tips are meant to be generic in nature, not specific advice, hopefully thought provoking and useful.
Again, I welcome your feedback.

Have a great week.

Market Commentary

JP Bio Pic
The US stock market finished the month of April "not with a bang but a whimper."  Even after falling 2.5% (total return) last week, the S&P 500 is still up +7.1% YTD through the end of April.  The +1.6% gain for the stock index last month was its 12th positive monthly gain in the last 14 months.  Stock market watchers are hoping that history repeats itself during the upcoming month.  May has been the best performing month for the S&P 500 over the past 2 decades (i.e., 1990-2009), gaining an average of +2.1% (source: BTN Research).

The Senate committee asking questions last week of Goldman Sachs executives were incredulous at what they viewed as shocking conflicts of interest that are at the heart of the SEC case against the firm.  Wall Street insiders were equally incredulous at the naiveté of the questions posed by senators that do not understand the basics of being a market maker.  The larger issue may be how the court of public opinion influences the financial regulatory legislation that finally moved to the full Senate for debate at the end of last week (source: Senate).

Both Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and former Chairman Alan Greenspan will share the dais later this week in Chicago at a Fed conference.  The 3-day meeting (Wednesday through Friday) will debate public policy as it relates to the banking, mortgage and financial services industries (source: Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago).

Notable Numbers

1.     QUITE A YEAR -
The trailing 12-month total return for the S&P 500 as of the end of April 2010 (i.e., the period from 5/01/09 to 4/30/10) is a gain of +38.8%, the 9th best trailing 1-year return for the stock index at the end of any month in the last 20 years.  The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks that is generally considered representative of the US stock market (source: BTN Research).

2.     HOUSING FOR FREE - The large number of residential foreclosures nationwide has slowed the banking and legal system that removes a delinquent borrower from his/her home.  The average time elapsed from the date that the last mortgage payment is made until the date when the nonpaying homeowner is removed through foreclosure is 14 months (source: Financial Times, Lender Processing).

3.     BILLS TO PAY - 2 out of every 3 college students (67%) graduates with an outstanding loan.  Of those students that finish college with loans, the average debt to be repaid is $23,200 (source: The Project on Student Debt).

4.     GOOD TIMES - The US recession that officially began in December 2007 is the 8th recession in our country in the last 50 years.  Following the 7 previous recessions that have taken place since 1960, the average length of time from the end of a recession until another official recession began is 71 months or approximately 6 years (source: National Bureau of Economic Research).
