Happy Holiday From Our Family to Yours
Happy Holidays from our family to yours!
The holiday season is here again, the cardinal season for family, friends, and celebration.  It is with a spirit of thanksgiving that Lydia and I would like to express our sincerest thanks to you, all of our dear readers and friends.  You have helped us create and nurture such wonderful memories here at Bay View.  Thank you for making Mackinac Island a warm and inclusive community.  We sincerely feel as though each guest is a member of our extended family, and we want you to feel that way, too.

We hope that you and yours share a wonderful joyous and festive holiday season.  Cherish the spirit of family and friendship, just as we hold your family and friendship dear to our hearts.  We can't wait to hear your holiday stories when you visit us next season!

With hearts of thanksgiving,

Mackinac Island Sensation:  Murdick's Fudge
A History of Mackinac Island's Number One Commodity

Mackinac Island Fudge
While fudge was not invented on Mackinac Island, the confections of the island have become some of the most popular in America. In the nineteenth century, maple sugar sweets were handmade by the local Odawa Indians in nearby "L'Arbor Croche" (The Crooked Tree), and then packaged in birchbark containers called "mokuks."  These were then shipped from Mackinac Island via Great Lakes steamships to confectioners throughout the Northern United States.

Hand crafted sweets thrived on Mackinac Island; tourists had quite a taste for the regional and unique confections.  In 1887, Harry Murdick opened the first official confectionery: Murdick's Candy Kitchen.  Adding to its charm and allure, the front doors were opened and cooling fans blew the sweet smell of cooling candy and fudge across giant marble slabs and into the streets.  The Murdicks had turned a simple kitchen activity into a wonderfully scented spectator sport.

Long distance demand for Mackinac Island fudge increased in the 1930s, and ferries carried greater quantities of the confections to the US more than ever before. After World War II, the tourism business boomed, and postwar tourists began to take home suitcases full of fudge, chocolates, and homemade candies, further spreading the popularity of Mackinac's variety of confections.

Today, there are several fudge and confectionery shops on Mackinac Island; a testament to the popularity and quality of their delightful offerings. The ingredients and end product of the fudge are highly prized as a part of Mackinac's culture.

Murdick's FudgeMurdick's Candy Kitchen remains an Island staple. The mouthwatering dance of confectioners stirring and folding fudge over the marble slabs continues today. After all, who can resist the allure and wonder of hand made candies right before their very eyes! It's truly a sight to see for yourself.

Music of Bay View: Beegie Adair, The Inn Keeper's Choice

As a former executive music producer, owner/Innkeeper Doug Yoder definitely left a part of his heart in Nashville.  Because of his passion for music and desire to share that with you, from time to time Doug plans to spotlight a talented and deserving artist.  We are delighted to offer you this sneak-peek into the Bay View Playlist!

This season, Bay View is happy to appropriately feature the soothing holiday collection, "Winter Romance," by Beegie Adair.  Hailing from Nashville, Beegie's keyboard talent lends itself to the relaxing atmosphere that is truly Bay View. Now you can enjoy that musical style that you have so often asked about.

You have often reminded us how Beegie's unique touch and identifiable piano style are a delightful treat while sharing your time with us at Bay View and Brigadoon.  She is an extraordinary musician, and we are proud to share her talent as the InnKeeper's Choice this holiday season.  Click on the link below to enjoy Beegie's album, "Winter Romance," and settle in with a slice of Mackinac Island comfort in your own home or office!
