Greetings!
It's the first full week of summer weather here on Mackinac Island. The trees have finally burst into vibrant greens and the Island's annual guests are indulging their spring fever with one-day to one week excursions. June is an active month in northern Michigan, with several not-to-be-missed, annual events, including our historic and treasured Lilac Festival.
We are excitedly working on the new Bay View Gifts and Outfitters set to open in mid-June. The waterfront store connected to Bay View already serves as our gift shop, but will soon feature our specialty Bay View items, unique gifts, and name-brand outfitter apparel that is often needed while on the island. More news to come soon.
As always, we look forward to seeing you and serving you here this season.

Summer Calendar Kicking off with the Most Important Event- The Lilac Festival
We
are excited to celebrate the 61st Annual Mackinac Island Lilac Festival
June 11th-20th.
The lilac collection began in 1949 after a conversation with Evangilene
"Ling" Horn and Nurse Stella King who encouraged the then teen and
today's Mackinac Island Carriage Tours Veterinarian Dr. Bill Chambers to
have a parade on Lilac Sunday. The idea was to bring people to the
island to enjoy a great horse drawn parade amidst the lovely lilacs that
fragrance the island in June. What began as a one day event called the
Mackinac Island Lilac Day has blossomed into a ten day festival.
Events include Country Line Dancing, Lilac Festival 10K, Wine Tastings,
Golf Tournament, Garden Tour, State Park Nature Tour, Architectural
Walking Tours, Walk & Talk with Lilacs, A Taste of Mackinac,
Mackinac Island Dog & Pony Show and concludes with the Lilac
Festival Grand Parade. With ten days blooming with events, there is certainly enough fun for
all.
Other upcoming Fun Events on the Island: July 4th Spectacular
Fireworks & an All-American Picnic July 17 Annual Bay View Port Huron to Mackinac Yacht Race July 22-24 2nd Annual Mackinac Island Festival of the Horse July 24 Annual Port Huron to Mackinac Yacht Race July 25th Vintage Baseball Game Aug 20-21 Annual Mackinac Island Fudge Festival Aug 17-19 Annual Mackinac Island Music Festival Aug 8 40th Annual Mackinac Island Horse Show Sept 3-6 Labor Day Jazz Weekend Oct 15-17 Somewhere in Time Weekend (30th Anniversary) Oct 22-24 Ballroom Dance Weekend

When Harry Met Sally ...a Mackinac Island Love Story
In our sterile, eHarmony and match-dot-com society, romantic serendipity seems as outdated a notion as the horse-drawn carriages of Mackinac. But here on our Island, there are still those moments of magic... even if they take a while to evolve. Here is one of those such stories...
A sprinkling of freckles across a porcelain face, framed by ribbons of chestnut curls, Sally was the spitting image of her Aunt Grace who ran the soda fountain at Bailey's Drug Store and Fudge Shop in 1943. Sally was working the counter that summer before starting four years at MSU on an academic scholarship. Harry had been working with his dad for the past two seasons and part time at the Bay View. Sinewy and jovial, Harry was a popular young dock porter; his father, Cyrus, tended to the grounds and maintenance for one of the local hotels. Adventurous Harry had enlisted in the Navy and would be departing within a few months.
One evening, Harry was dispatched to Bailey's to purchase a box of fudge for a guest. He saw Sally and was smitten. And she, likewise. Over that summer, they shared many glasses of lemonade on the porch, afternoon strolls on the old boardwalk by the water's edge, and bike rides around the Island. At summer's end, much in love but facing a reality of separation, they vowed to stay in touch. And they did... but not forever. Over time the letters became fewer...and farther between...until they stopped completely.
Sally completed her degree, accepted an instructor's position at an area high school, and married. During the summers she would still visit Mackinac and spend time assisting at her aunt's fudge shop where she had worked for Mathew Bailey many years ago. Harry became a Navy career man traveling the world. He doted on his many nieces and nephews. Five years ago, he purchased a raffle ticket from one of them who was raising money for their Chicago middle school. His prize? A weekend at Bay View. He laughed at the irony. But Harry booked his weekend for May and was thrilled to return to the Victorian B & B.
His stroll down memory lane, of course, took him into the former Bailey's Drug Store and Fudge Shop, now Murdick's Fudge Shop, located directly across from the Chippewa Hotel. Sally, recently-widowed, could not believe her eyes when the Chief walked in the door. And too-busy-to-get-married Harry, couldn't wait to catch up over a sentimental glass of lemonade. The two re-ignited their relationship which continues to this day with an annual wedding anniversary escape to Bay View.
They say the love of your life comes along but once. You may find it in a fudge shop or on a biking trail. Maybe later rather than soon. Maybe the Mackinac Island way - for those who can't resist the magic - which certainly has more romance than a dot com.
If you have your own sequel to Somewhere in Time, and would like to share it with us and others, please send it on...We would love to hear it.

Bay View "Georgia-Peach" French Toast A traditional Bay View Favorite
We had an overwhelming response from our last email for our signature Peach French Toast recipe, and thought we should include it now for anyone who didn't have a chance to call. Enjoy!
Prep time, 15 minutes...Serves 6-8 Microwave or stove top preferably the night before * May also be prepared in advance and frozen to bake at a later date.
Melt 1/2 stick of butter with 1/2 cup of brown sugar & 1 cup dark Kayro syrup. Bring mixture to a boil stirring occasionally and remove from heat. Stir until mixture appears uniform and smooth. Pour mixture into sprayed or greased 9 x 14 cake dish and let sit for five minutes to cool. Drain one (1) 32 oz. can of sliced or diced peaches (Save the drained peach juice) * If you use sliced peaches, you may want to chop them up into chunky thirds.
Distribute the peaches evenly over the top of butter/syrup mixture. In your largest mixing bowl, blend 9 whole eggs, 2 cups whole milk 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
You will need approximately one loaf of white bread. One at a time, dip each piece of white bread into the milk mixture and lay flat, side by side over the top of the peaches and syrup mixture forming a long single row. Continue to repeat the dipping process and overlap the previous bread row by at least ..... Continue until the dish is full. You may want to think about how to lay it out before you start dipping the bread.
Practice makes perfect. Once you have filled the baking dish, pour the remaining mixture evenly over the top. Sprinkle generously with cinnamon, cover, and place in refrigerator to sit over night. (Also freezes well before baking)
Baking: Thaw or let sit (in refrigerator over night if necessary) until mixture reaches room temperature. Bake at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes or until top is lightly toasted. Let stand to cool for 5 to 10 minutes. Sprinkle generously with powdered sugar. Optional... serve with a 50/50 mixture of the drained peach juice and pancake syrup on the side. We hope you enjoy this Bay View & Brigadoon favorite, and think of us with every bite ! Best served with Bay View Blend Coffee...of course.
